One thing I forgot to mention: It is probably a good idea to initially learn hopping with the same foot forward as you would have when mounting. That way, it is easy to get into hopping directly from a freemount, which can be very practical. (I still highly recommend being able to hop and mount with either foot forward, but it is natural to be better in the position you learned first.)

These are wonderful! You are a very good instructor with clear explanations of things that I have had difficulty understanding. Thanks for putting in all the time to make and post these!

Rolling hops were always a struggle for me. You put together a very thorough and encouraging tutorial. Thanks!

Great to see a mountain unicyclist's perspective on these topics! I'm wondering if/how the brake can help on hops and drops, does it work like on a bike?

There are two situations where I use the brake to help on hops: On a hill to keep the wheel locked, so that you aren't fighting against the hill with your feet. The tricky bit there is getting on and off the brake with the right timing, so that you can still move the cranks a bit to keep balance. Also, when I'm landing a drop into a downhill, I'm often on the brake a bit, it helps take some pressure of the back foot if you are leaning back too much. The risk here is getting thrown off the front if you are braking to much, or sliding out. Both of them I felt were outside the scope of this video, as they are a bit more advanced.

Solid video, man. I went from hopping in place to hopping off curbs and low structures in a few hours after watching this. You present a very logical progression to learning this skill. Thank you!

you kinda forgot to mention that when you hopping in one place you need to jump towards the direction that you are "falling" towards... Really not masterd the rolling jumps but tempted to try again after watching this, nice video!

That's true, I could have mentioned that. Although in my experience, people will figure that automatically on their first few attempts of hopping in place. Glad I inspired you to give rolling hops another try! :)

Do you recommend using the brake for any of these practice techniques? Or is it better to learn to balance the pedals with your feet only?
@unicyclebasics

I think the brake is mostly a hinderance, because it makes adjusting forward/backward balance with your feet harder, so I would recommend starting without. I use it when hopping on hills (which I will actually cover in a new video coming out next week) and when I'm leaning too far back on a drop it can help take some pressure of the back foot when landing, but both of those are slightly more advanced I think.

Great tutorial. Just a remark on unicycle parts' quality and rider's weight parameters. I found Qu-ax luxus axle failing for me after 4 years, happened twice, same period of time each time, between crank and fork, my weight is around 70. Normal riding wouldn't have caused it, I hop quite often, sometimes I drop from heights up to 40-45 cm. I bet uni of muni's level will endure much more. After 2 breaks replaced it with q-axle hub.

The luxus is not designed for jumps. If you are just hopping in place it can be fine, but it's explicitly not recommended to be used for anything but simple riding in the owners manual.

@@unicyclebasics wanted to stress out exactly this point, the possibility of fatigue in a less sturdy unicycle due to frequent hoppig and occasional drops, although performed to result in very soft landings. No other more acrobatic activities were involved. 1-st breakdown happened while descending from a curb, 2-nd occurred during a mount. Now the hub is stronger, I assume the fork will hold with my activities. The fork and the seat post are the last original parts now (the rim was replaced by a strong one, the tyre is duro wildlife, plenty of air to absorb shocks with right pressure).

Very good video man, thanks! What distance to the saddle would you recommend for a good compromise? I guess the lower the better if you were only to jump all the time, but when you're out riding on a trail it's quite nice if the saddle is a bit higher up.
@unicyclebasics
@unicyclebasics 5 ай бұрын
There is a point where going lower won't even help you jump better. I don't really have a good tip other than experimenting with seat height until you find a compromise that suits you, unfortunately.

I’ve started to hop always when I was riding. So I’ve come to mount the unicycle left foot back but I’m comfortable hopping left foot front 😩
