Many years ago, I had a two seater Hobie. My GF was in the front seat at Silver Lake in the June lake loop. She hooked the largest trout I've ever seen and I have caught my share of 4 pounders. It was so huge it wouldn't fit in the net! It finally snapped the 2 pound leader as I paddled to keep up with it. We took a canoe to Sotcher Lake near the Mammoth ski lift area before they closed down the road to the lake. It was wide open two pounders near a rock ledge. We just tied off to a dead tree stump. It is now a long walk down a dirt road if you're hauling a canoe or kayak.

There are some *monsters* in them lakes, for sure. The entire area is beautiful, and a real treasure for those who don't mind the drive.

My go-to bait for planter rainbows in the eastern sierras is a 1/32 oz lead head with a pink power worm. If they don't hit that, I'll try a white crappie jig on the same size lead head. I've caught much more trout jigging with plastics than I ever have with metal spoons, but fishing metal crank baits is a lot of fun. I've never thought to drop shot for trout before, but I'm definitely going to give it a try next time.

Nice. Is it a vertical presentation or a 45 degree presentation. I think that's what we should have tried in the creek.
@lubeinatube8135 жыл бұрын
@@honeybadgervoodoooutdoors7305 Almost always casting it, so 45 degree retrieval, unless I'm dropping down onto a mark. I feel I catch more trout covering water compared to targeting marks.

Thank you for this video! The Eastern Sierra is my favorite place on Earth. I saved this place for next year. I've been going to Mammoth Lakes Basin for the last 3 years and decided to go the Eastern Sierra at least twice a year now so I can explore other areas

Was that silver lake for the second lake you guys went to?
@honeybadgervoodoooutdoors73052 жыл бұрын
hi - no, we typically don't go to the more popular lakes up there. it was Lundy Lake, but things have changed drastically because of the drought. it looked nothing like that the last couple of times we went.

I have fished rock creek. We used flies and a clear bubble and limited everyday on rainbow and caught browns near the creek
@honeybadgervoodoooutdoors73055 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I think I saw someone do that. I will try it next time. What kind of flies?

Use some butter worms. There kinda pricey but there like candy for trout. I’ve seen plenty of people hook on drop shot rigs for trout. Also Carolina rigs work pretty good. I also use crickets and salmon eggs for brook trout on an egg hook Sometimes with no weight or just one split shot attached. Mini jigs, power bait spoons all work great for lake trout.

Nice video man. I love the drop shot as well as throwing mini jigs. Heading up there next week.

I love watching your videos, they're so informal and entertaining! What size test mono line did you use and hook? I'm offshore usually but i'm going up north in a few weeks and i'm clueless about freshwater.

Thank you! I've not found a more effective lure than that gold Thomas Buoyant. The rig for that is a ~7' light rod with a 2000 size reel. I typically run ~10 lb braid as the main line, with a 7' section of 4 lb. fluoro tied via a Modified Albright knot. Or, you could just spool the entire reel with the 4 lb fluoro line.
@honeybadgervoodoooutdoors73055 жыл бұрын
For the bait setup, the best bait fishermen I know use a Carolina rig with about a 3 ft section of 2 lb fluoro leader and a size 6 hook. But if you are going "commando" like us in heavy cover, I'd recommend either 4 lb or 6 lb fluoro.

Put it on the roof or do what I did. I have a 14' kayak for the ocean and a 10' for the Sierra. Way easier. Happy fishing

Targeting prehistoric browns with that heavy gear lol nice! Lead core, guys troll the deep lakes up there with lead core. Thomas boyants are awesome, you ever try tazmanian devils? Had good luck with those too, at fred hall I bought some heavy ones for salt water. www.tasmaniandevillures.com/That net scene had me cringing, especially when he tried to hand line it into the yak. I miss the days of the planted Alpers now those were some good catching and eating. I want to try crawfishing next time I get up there, few lakes up there have good crawfish numbers. Try a crab boil back at camp =)
@honeybadgervoodoooutdoors73055 жыл бұрын
Well, that was the general game plan, but I don't think I have the skillz and patience for that kind of fishing :) I definitely want to try a crawfish boil next time.
