I took my wife caving for her first time 7 years ago and she got hooked. I'm pretty good at controlling my fears but I get silently freaked out crawling underground. Keep it to myself so I don't get others nervous over nothing. I just found your channels a month ago and I cant stop watching you and Jacob! I used to sit on the edge of my seat and cringe and I've been starting to relax... and cringe hahaha! I'm a little guy with a spinal cord injury and I'm extremely flexible so we are looking into some more intense crawls this year. Figured crawling could be good adventuring for someone like me lol Love it guys keep crawling! I like the less edited versions of your vids on Even Darker but I watch both perspectives.

Your dad has the right idea. Staying active at that age is key. I am about 15 years younger than your dad here. I do biking, swimming and always kayaking to the many islands that are a few miles away from my home out on the water. You guys ever visit Florida, you're welcome to come adventure with us. We may not have any local caves where I am at locally. But lots of water based island adventures. Almost equally as dangerous as the rip tides out here take a few souls every year for those who don't understand how it all works. I make it a point to take my boat out and rescue the younger ones who foolishly kayak out to the islands and get stuck. The ones who try to "make it out" are the ones you have to save. I posted signs up on the islands warning people that if you get out here and the tide hits you wrong you should just spend the night on the island. I store water and leave maps to the buried water supplies for those who do end up out there over night. Can't save them all, but gives me lots of exercise.

Anyway, looking back I don't know how I did it, but after a few times of going in and out I got used to it. I'm extremely claustrophobic, but at the time it was my job and I had to push through, or go home basically. It's just amazing what the mind can do! I also didn't want to be the scared guy in the Team 😂 Keep up the great work and informative videos 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Yes, that's one of the tricks! Just getting used to it. I mean even one specific space. Sometimes I will go to a cave and I don't like an area. And I go back and I'll go a little further in. And then I'll go back again and I will make it through the passage and then once I'm comfortable and no I can make it no longer scares me. But the first time is always pretty scary.

how da hell are you getting service in a cave!?! what sorcery is this!? Btw why dont you get like a intel realsense lidar point cloud camera and map the caves exactly in 3d instead of sketching?
@EvenDarker3 жыл бұрын
We usually don't even get service outside so it was a bit of an anomaly. It has never happened before and very unlikely to happen again. I now have a lidar scanner. For my purposes it will work for many of these smaller caves. But there are reasons the larger caving community has rejected 3-D modeling thus far. The main one being that the technology is not streamlined for everyone yet. But there is also some unwritten rules about cave mapping. One of them is about limiting information to only what is necessary. They literally don't want too good of a map. Maps are to only show the basics of the layout of a cave and not exactly what it looks like. I think the reasoning is for the protection of the caves but also so if you want to know what a cave looks like you have to go inside. The private world! But there'll be nothing they can do to stop technology once the 3-D modeling becomes super easy to use.
@bitrage.3 жыл бұрын
@@EvenDarker Yea i guess that makes sense, i would use it as a system by getting an outer "rib cage" for your DSLR and attach the lidar/laser camera to it, then you could also get like textures (basicly pictures) ontop of the point cloud, i would think it would be easierthen sketching all the time, instead you run thru the cave and once you get the data back you can constrain the lidar point map to be simple or only show outline or whatever your needs, but you would always have the data, so if its ever needed in the future you wont have to keep goin back if lets say a client wants something you didnt log... Lol i am in the 3D industry so i guess i am bias...🤣
