How To Keep Summer Bucks During The Fall

Let's face it, Summer bucks that are here today are not here to stay. Bucks, unlike does, require a completely different set of deer habitat ingredients for the months of Summer, compared to the months of Fall and Winter. During the annual shift of bucks during the late Summer, bucks leave their Summer haunts to find higher stem counts in thicker Fall cover, as well as Fall food sources. "POOF" and just like magic this bucks that you have been watching all Summer are GONE! Bucks don't turn nocturnal for some magical reason - they just leave. However, it doesn't have to be. Here is how you can turn the trend around snd keep those Summer bucks that are on your land, during the Fall.

Just made two mock scrapes with grape vines hanging today. on known trails on benches. easy access to get into the trees above these trails. cameras in place. now i wait to see what happens. thanks for the advice.

I used your advice and put a mock scrape in and WOW. I had eight deer hit it, two fawns and a really big black bear with three little cubs come in yesterday and the day before. I just put it up Thursday. I have maybe two more scrapes locations to put in. I dont know if I'm going to put food plots in it's kind of wet but we'll see. Great videos and advice.

Something I am absolutely guilty of over the years is thinking that the Buck's fall range will be the same as the summer range, wrong! A friend of mine his property is a mile mile and a half away from where I hunt and sometimes he'll get pictures of bucks in the fall that I was getting pictures of in the summer. Amazing how their range changes in the fall

Problem here is the deer will not touch peas, turnips, brassicas, radishes or any of that other non normal AG process greens. Oats tend to freeze out along with the cold slowing the clover down which leaves us with late planted beans and winter wheat as the only tonnage option.

On our property my grandpa drives around everyday on his gator. He’s in his 80s so I like seeing him enjoy the woods he’s worked hard for so I don’t wanna say anything to him. What’s your opinion on checking trail cams with a gator. I know it isn’t preferable but wouldn’t it be the best option if he’s already driving it once a day?

That transition is really interesting from late summer to fall here. Deer seem to really be drawn to soybeans in early to mid summer however once the acorns start falling is when we tend to see the shift start to happen. Also coinciding with the bucks shedding. The cover seems the same as mid summer which begs to question is the food more important predictor of the fall shift than cover. Having a nice green food source would seem to be a better choice for the deer than the hard mast. Thoughts?

Keep cameras out year around. When squirrel and dove season hit in August/Sept, deer definitely change their habits. Bucks do go nocturnal, even if they choose to stick around. Salt licks get less visits as bucks come out of velvet, though they still will visit, usually in the dark. As October comes in and especially late October, some bucks that I have followed antler growth on all summer, may disappear, only to be replaced by other bucks, that I have zero trail cam pics of all summer. I am reluctant to shoot doe in my core hunting area, because I don't want to educate them to my presence or be a threat. I feel like they are what draw the mating bucks in, giving me the best chance to harvest one. Many hunters don't have the opportunity to do food plots, because they don't own the land they hunt on. Farmers have crops out and harvest them usually Sept/Oct giving most food plot options a narrow window to be a viable winter food source. We start getting first frost mid to late October. Is there anything that can be planted, that grows quickly, and will remain a food source for at least thru the month of November, that may be somewhat frost tolerant?

I watch these and a lot of it doesn't apply to the area I hunt. I mainly hunt wilderness areas but I always find overlap in species and habitat. A lot of this rings true for mule deer and blacktail. The best way to hold a mule buck in place is to anchor him with a berger at 3400 fps.

@Number 1 Fan yes... and they also have some of the same habits like making rub lines and bedding in thickets. On the cascades you can pattern bucks in the early season just like a whitetail.

I have a plot, that only gets visited by bachelor groups… no doe…but I’m surrounded by agricultural fields…when corns ripe, how do I hold them?? I have low pressure, I have good food, shelter, water (2 lakes). And every year I hear of my neighbors shoots and seeing my bucks during shooting hours in their corn. How does one win here?

Jeff - I continue to learn everyday watching your videos, 'thank you'. I bow hunt on a 40 acre private parcel that for simplicity purposes is a 'picture frame' with ag land (this year corn; 3 years of corn, 1 year of soybeans, repeat) in the middle and approximately 10-20 feet of trees on the border which is where I place a popup ground blind (last year I put within the corn) and I have three deer stands. This year (in the few areas I could - some corners have some slightly more wooded areas) I will be utilizing your 'no till' approach, in fact I just placed the buckwheat this weekend; I will have turnips and broadcast winter rye grain. QUESTION - how would you access stands and/or limit hunting pressure; essentially how would you hunt a 'picture frame' setup? Thanks - Tyler

I know this can be a controversial tactic, but here in Southern NJ, there aren’t the large land parcels available to purchase or lease, like there are in the Midwest. Hi Jacob...sorry to hear that! It depends on the species and if there are roots still attached but typically they will not. However, the sunlight now allowed to hit the forest floor as well as the trunks and tops of the downed trees will create incredible cover! You just need to make sure that deer can still navigate thru the downed trees...it can easily become to thick for deer!

Why would my property have certain bucks leave in late summer after staying all summer and other bucks (usually older) move in? Do these older mature deer push the 2-3 year old bucks out and take the good habitat for themselves? Does it have to do with where they were born?
