In this video, I'm going to show you how I use detailed spreadsheets to keep track of my vinyl record collection, and why you might want to start doing the same!
From streaming services to physical media like CDs and vinyl records, we are inundated with music everywhere we turn. And while it's a great time to be a fan of music, the downside is that with so much available at our fingertips, it's getting harder and harder to properly catalog all of the albums we enjoy listening to, let alone own on vinyl.
So in today's video, let's take a look at how I use spreadsheets to not only keep a record of my entire vinyl collection, but how it also comes in handy for recalling songs I love, unique facts about certain artists or producers, details on sampled songs featured on notable records and so much more!.

I've got my collection catalogued on Discogs. In their collection catalog tool, you can customize and add your own data fields if you want. Things like where it was purchased, date, price, etc. You can even add drop-downs for things like "For Sale" or "Needs Upgrade". They offer and export as well so you can save it as a spreadsheet just incase. Makes it nice and simple.

When I found this channel, I no idea how deep the name "Devoted to Vinyl" could be! Solid video, if my vinyl collection ever gets this extensive I'll need to implement some of this!

I catalog mine in Discogs. It definitely helps when you’re out shopping for records and you can’t remember if you already own a particular title or not.

Love this. So simple, but I actually had a bit of a mini epiphany, thinking about how I want to track this, now that I’m pushing close to 900 LPs in my collection. First, I don’t think this replaces, or serves the same purpose as tracking my collection in Discogs. I see it as complimentary, with this really focused on listening habits, etc. Secondly, I’m stealing the spreadsheet, lol. You’ve distilled down to the main things I’d want to track, no more. Keeps it manageable in my mind. Only thing I won’t use is the Genre column (useless in my mind; so arbitrary and a lot of music tends to cross many genres anyway). In it’s place I’ve created, “Typical listening occasions” which I fill with “This is perfect for a summer BBQ party”, or “This is a rainy day somber mood vibe”. Sure, still possible to have multie occasions (like multiple genres), but I do find this twist more useful for me. Hope you’re still looking to make content; it’s an enjoyable channel.

I use a very similar sheet, I track the following: Artist, Album Title, Original Release Year, Reissue Year, Label, Purchased, New or Used), Condition(poor, Good, Very Good, Excellent, Near Mint and mint), Catalog #, Runout Data, and Notes

I used excel for years to do this. I had some training on Microsoft access a few years back and I'm slowly relearning it to build a database for my collections.

Love your videos...very informative...wish they were more often! I keep my collection documented in a similar manner. I use an excel spreadsheet to catalogue each of my purchases...day purchased, store/website, etc... My main tool, however, is Discogs. I've customized the Discogs "Collection" options with additional dropdown categories: Grading, Country, Release Date, Pressing Plant, Sleeve Type, Price Paid, Genre Folders, Notes, etc... Every few weeks, I export the spreadsheet to keep on my hard drive in the case Discogs crashes.

Great video! Another interesting thing is that jazz flutist Hubert Laws and saxophonist Ronnie Laws are the brothers of Debra and Eloise Laws. What a talented family!

do you have a blank spread-sheet, that users can make their own?
