Dead… what?! Deadheading isn’t as scary as it sounds. Simply put, it means, ‘Cutting off the old flower.” In my video I’ll show you how to deadhead the spent (old) roses so that your climber will continue to produce more beautiful flowers all season long.
On my channel you will also find an entire playlist dedicated to climbing roses & trellises. You’ll find that very helpful as you begin your climbing rose journey.

I have a 15 yr old Don Juan with really thick canes. I’ve never really pruned it until this year because I didn’t know how to😢 My Don Juan is however very fragrant and blooms large flowers! I love these roses. Hope yours is doing well!

My Don Juan is not very fragrant either and only will bloom once throughout the summer, I also have some David Austin climbing roses so I'm finding your deadheading video very useful most certainly for the reblooming type of climbing or Rambler

I LOVE this! Thank you so much for your wonderful explanation. Can you enlighten on difference between rambling and climbing roses?

Hi Katherine, You made my day! I'd love to make a video about the difference. But, until then I'll tell you what I know. They both climb, But the climbers are often repeat bloomers & come in a wider range of vibrant colors. They are mostly 8-15' long. Ramblers usually blooms once a yr & often come in more natural tone colors. They can be much longer than a climber. @fraser valley rose farm is one of my favorite rose resources. You might enjoy their channel too. Thank you for such a great question. I hope I can make a video about that soon because that would mean I get to plant two more roses! 😊

Mine is about 8 months old. In its 2nd round of flowers. It’s growing soooo fast. 3 open & 4 buds. Very small though, but that’s ok. It’s amazing. I would say it has a medium scent. Very nice. Only one problem. I live in Fl. 9b. The harsh sun from 8:30-1:00 lightens his beautiful color & it gets washed out. I really had to move it. It’s so entangled on the lattice. Plus my climbing opportunities are limited.

Hi Alecia! Thank you for the great info. Your rose sounds beautiful. You're welcome to post pics in our facebk grp, Favorite Hobby Gardeners. We;d love to see it. Im glad to learn that too much hot, hot sun can be a problem. That help me determine where I might want to put my next rose.

So, the rosehips won't also eventually produce flowers on their own? Can you take the rose hips and get the seeds out of them to grow more roses? What happens if you don't cut anything off except the dead flowers? This was a great video, thank you! Your garden looks lovely!
@favoritehobbygardenerOKLAHOMA
@favoritehobbygardenerOKLAHOMA 2 жыл бұрын
Hi T Mc. Yes, In theory you can open the hip & plant the dried seeds. Ill have to save a few & make a video about it. You could leave the hips on the plant but the plant will be working so hard to make seeds, etc that it'll produce less flowers. And the plant will look messy over time with all of the remaining hips & stems. It seems to me that getting those hips off the plant sooner is better. What I am not sure of yet, is how long the hip should stay on the plant if the goal is to harvest hips for the purpose of planting the seeds? I'll have to look into that. Thanks for your question T Mc. 😊

I’ve been learning that rose scents vary due to weather conditions and the age of the blooms. Also had covid recently and it did affect my sense of smell but today seems better .

Great video. Where did you get the fence and what are the holders I see at the bottom called? They look like they are holding the fence up. I have 5 climbing roses I need to deal with as well. Thank you in advance. :)

cutiepie, Thank you. There is a video on my channel that shows you how to make this trellis. Its cattle panels from tractor supply type stores. Lowes has them too. You can cut them to size with bold cutters. It was attached to the top of the wooden structure. I used the stakes to try & keep it in place but the plant held it in place better once it began to grow up the trellis. So if a main cane blooms, you leave the rose seed pod? Or main canes dont bloom?
@favoritehobbygardenerOKLAHOMA
@favoritehobbygardenerOKLAHOMA 2 жыл бұрын
Cesar, You are right, The main cane doesnt bloom. The lateral canes grow off the Main. The laterals bare the flowers.

My Don Juan smells amazing...I'm in Dallas, TX and on year 3. I have 2 and they are blooming well, however one of them seems fairly sparse in the foliage department. Any idea what might be happening?

Lorenlash9174, You're so blessed to have such fragrant roses! Do both of the plants get the same amount of sunshine? If there is not a problem like a disease, etc. Then it could be a lack of sunshine?
