Clorox is bleach, and what the company claims is, the chlorine evaporates quickly and leaves the surface wet still, allowing mold to grow. It may be good visually but not the best solution. The company has another product for stains. I used it at another house and it was great. The other thing I used was salt and thyme oil. Windows would sweat and therefore making it hard to keep things dry. You can spray thyme oil in water, but that ads to moisture, or you can add the oil to salt and sprinkle in the trouble areas of a window. If the window sweats, it just makes sea water and mold doesn’t like the environment. Plus, how I understand it, this product is based on thyme.

After you treat the areas with mold, how long until you know it has killed the mold, when it dries? And then what do you do to remove the dead mold off of the wall?

Depends on the surface. Use a copper “Chore Boy” or some type of copper scrubbing pad to scrub the area with dawn dish detergent. Use some blue shop towels to wipe it all up with. Don’t forget where the mold was. This will only remove the outward showing growth, although there can still be microscopic pores on the surface or deep in the surface. Once wiped up, spray with Concrobium Mold Control (which should be found at your local hardware store- Home Depot, etc.). Really saturate it with this product, especially if it’s a porous surface like wood. Let it dry naturally over the course of a few days and this product will leave behind a protective film that prevents future growth. Depending on where the area is at, you could also sprinkle some Borax to prevent future growth (good for hidden areas that aren’t so easy to get back into, like inside a wall or under a house or something)

What about white vinegar by spray bottle. For real stubborn spots make a paste of baking soda mixed with a little white vinegar and lay it on thick, to kill the mold. It is cheap too.

I've used Killz in gallons on a basement space and now for a ceiling that was never properly treated/refinished post hurricane Sandy. Do you like the killz products or are there other available alternatives that you feel work better? I just want to protect my family. TIA if you see this!

Hi There! Toxicity is always a matter of degrees, and though bleach won't hurt you if you using for washing clothes, in the concentrations used to try and kill mold, the fumes can definitely be harmful. Also, bleach bleaches surfaces and makes them lighter. Registered fungicides don't have either issue (at least not the one I used in this video). I hope this helps. Bye for now, Steve

I don't understand this concrombium stuff - are you just suppose to leave the crushed mold on your walls even though it looks bad? You can't tell a difference between the mold you've sprayed and the mold you haven't sprayed. And if you leave it on the walls you won't be able to tell when new mold forms because you still got the old stuff on the walls.

I got rental property and I had tried everything before repainted but the mold still remains. I'm not sure that was tenant fault or we didn't kill all spores. It awful, I have been spent so much energy and time to decorated the property. It only one property that have a problem once it got mold it never gone.

The most important thing is to figure out where the moisture issues are. If the issue is coming from the other side of the drywall. If you don’t take care of the issue it will come back. Find a mold inspector in your area.

Hi Steve, I did something very stupid and I would like to get an advice.. I took off the vinyl baseboard from around the floor, there was a black mold behind it but I ignored it and I started to close the area with thick layer of joint compounds, a few days later the mold started to show up on that layer (of course)... What would you recommend me to do - take off this joint compounds and clean it from its base or just try to use something to kill it only on the surface? Thank you, Dassy

I'm not steve but mold is a tricky thing to work with, one hand there is a chance the joint compound "rushed it when it dried, but at the same time I've seen mold in joint compound before so personally I'd take the extra step clear the joint before fully taking action on the mold, (ofcourse also fixing the cause of the moisture that made the mold aswell).

I'm applying Concrobium Mold Control to the blackened areas as soon as the previous floor covering is removed and subfloor completely dry. Then waiting for that to dry @ 72 hours so crushing action can occur as well (though dries to touch much faster) Next with mold hopefully mostly dead cleaning surface with borax and brush scrub. Next re-applying concrobium and allowing to dry. Next painting with Kilz-Zinz or similar. What am I missing or doing wrong?

I agree with everything except this concept that the shrinking treatment "crushes" mold spores. Do you have any additional scientific data to support this concept? New idea to me. My other concern is that the treatment has to dry and shrink before it is effective. What happens in the meantime? Wet mold grows and when it grows it produces the toxins that make us sick. Drying it out may take a while and now you have made it even wetter with the spray. You may have a solution for some cases, but I don't think this is a complete solution for all cases, especially areas that require additional drying after spraying treatment because you have provided a moisture source for the mold that can continue to grow while you are waiting for it to dry, if it ever does. Spraying any moisture in an area that is already susceptible to mold growth could make things worse before they make them any better. Interesting concept but I am skepticle, especially when there are services like Pure Maintenance's patented dry vapor treatment that kills mold everywhere and gets nothing wet.

I have a small refrigerator/freezer in our RV. It had mold growing in it and I finally noticed it. I shut it off, scrubbed it and left the door open to dry thoroughly! I plan to replace it in the rv. My brainstorm is to still be able to use the frig/freezer out back in my BIG shop as a BEER frig. Now the bad frig had quite a few 1 - 2" mold spots in it on the white plastic wall areas. I was simply wondering if it would be safe to clean it out ETC and then spay paint the inside white again if needed. It has just been sitting unused for a few years. the mold has not grown after scrubbing it out and leaving the door open. A couple hundred bucks could by a feeeew beers for my friends and I to enjoy!! JUST CURIOUS IF THERE WOULD BE A SAFE WAY TO DO THIS?? Thanks!!

Hi Kawakeb Astra - Yes I scrubbed it with a clorox/bleach solution and nothing has grown since! I think all I see is just the existing stain spots from the previous mold spots. Nothing has grown, so just getting the right can of spay paint would be ok for the frigerator and to still use it in the RV. That is what I am thinking now at least. Thanks for the input!

Good Morning John, Thanks for your note. It's been a while since I made this video, but I thought I did mention specific options. What you want is a registered fungicide. This means a product has been independently tested and found to kill mold to some minimum standard. The best stuff I know of is called Concrobium. It's widely available, inexpensive and has become the gold standard for professional mold abatement specialists from what I've seen. It's also non-toxic. It kills mold and mold spores by crushing them physically, not by poisoning them. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching! Steve

any biocide chemical will kill mould. I use an antimicrobial chemical.Now remember killing mould does not get rid of MVOC's. Dead mould still have MVOC's and some moulds still produce mycotoxins. Hence why mould needs to be physically removed. Chemicals are only used in hospitals, nursing homes or any environment that has people with weak immunes systems. A dust musk will not stop mould from going into your lungs you will need a proper mask with the correct filter. I am a restoration technician and I hold a iicrc s520 certification in mould remediation

How can mycotoxins be safely be removed? It's very hard to find them for one thing as they don't normally have a smell or can't be seen as well, correct? I take lessons at a house which is making one of the inhabitants ill and they did a mycotoxin test that showed one mycotoxin in a large number. The family is at their wits end about what to do about it.

Misinformation. Bleach can soak in and kill all the mould fine, often it is diluted 60% to make it thin enough to penetrate. 'Crushing mould spores' is non-sense. The proprietary mould killers have other chemicals which persist in the masonry - unlike bleach which evaporates out, the other mould killers I am familiar with also evaporate but much more slowly. Generally the correct procedure for mouldy grout is apply bleach - this removes a lot of the staining and kills everything it touches dead, then add an anti mould solution.
