I called southern ag to find out the recommended amount of pyrethrin to add to my 48 oz fogger. (A little under a oz). He said the pyrethrin was a great preventer but did not kill the bug inside the leaf. He recommended a product called conserve naturalyte which would kill the bug inside the leaf.

Thank you! Let me know how it works out for you. Remember, repeating the process a few times is key, because you will not contact every insect or destroy all the eggs with a single application. After about 3 treatments, you should really see a lot of progress.

Thank you for the video. I followed your link and purchased it. Kind of bummed though because my satsuma has only been in the ground one week. I found out the nursery I got it from doesn’t spray for bugs at all and they said it won’t kill the tree, but nearly every leaf was decimated with leaf miners. I went ahead and removed nearly every leaf as you recommended. Tried to get your fogger too from your link but it is no longer available. Do you have another one that you recommend? I’ve been watching you for the past six months. We just got our orchard planted. We had nothing but weeds when we moved in. Exhausted and sore but excited about the future. Hope I can save the little satsuma.

I had a leaf miner problem on my orange tree and the County agriculture biologist told me I could let a natural wasp take care of the leaf miner or use the chemicals. I opted to let the wasps work and yes it worked! The leaf miner is gone. But now I’m in the oriental fruit fly quarantine area and the larvae are decimating my oranges. So I guess I’ll just take all the oranges off and hope for the best.

I am not a fan of predatory insects, and here is why: if predatory insects could take care of the problem, the problem would never have occurred in the first place. While you can bring in predatory insects, as soon as they run out of food, they'll leave, and then the problem will return again. I just don't believe it's a sustainable way to take care of the problem. One of the consequences of growing non-native species is sometimes it just isn't possible to make it a completely sustainable ecosystem since they don't belong here, so some human intervention is necessary. Not all insecticides are harmful. Pyrethrin, spinosad and wettable sulfur are three examples that have very little harmful downsides when applied in the evening to protect diurnal pollinators. That being said, if the insects worked for you, I think it's fine with the understanding that you'll have to keep bringing them in over and over again when the problem pops back up.

The machine is awesome. It's the best time-saving investment I've ever made for my garden aside from maybe my weed barrier. I can spray my entire summer garden in 15 minutes. It used to take over an hour with a pump sprayer, and since the mist is so even, I use half the amount of concentrates.

I have a Satsuma tree that's having a leafminer problem. The tree is only a few months old. So my question is how much pruning of infected leaves is too much? I want to make sure there are some leaves left to create proper photosynthesis for the plant to survive winter. I live in GA in zone 7b-8a. Thanks
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Жыл бұрын
I would remove any leaves that have clear evidence of larvae. It's unlikely every leaf is infected, but use your best judgment on this. If that leaves you with few leaves, apply a high nitrogen fertilizer to encourage more leafy growth.

Wouldn’t that also kill bees and butterflies? I have leaf miners on my citrus trees but those are host plants to many butterflies. I can’t spray insecticide on them. Any other suggestions?
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Жыл бұрын
Bees and butterflies go away at night. Simply spray after sunset when they leave. Pyrethrin is natural and degrades rapidly. It kills the pests overnight that harbor inside the tree, and by the time the sun rises, it's largely been oxidized. Once the sun beats on the tree, it burns up the natural pesticide. The half-life is very short.

I’m concerned about this too. Yes butterflies and bees leave but it’s a host plant for giant swallowtail and the caterpillars don’t leave at night. Spraying would kill all the cats

Bt works for leafminers too.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Жыл бұрын
I haven't tried BT. I'm just guessing, here, but since BT is effective against caterpillars and worms, I would *assume* the leaf miners would have to be from that family of pests. If the leaf miners are from species not affected by BT, it may not be helpful. I could be wrong and all larvae may be similar to worms and caterpillars, but I just wanted to throw out that potential pitfall. If you don't want to use pyrethrin, another option is spinosad. It isn't quite as harsh as pyrethrin, but I would think spinosad would easily kill leaf miners. The downside is 3-4 times more expensive, since it costs more up-front and the concentrations have to be higher.
@DebRoo11

I havent had luck with BT for leaf miners. I have a feeling its because they're completely surrounded by leaf by the time they're susceptible to the BT

Ytu685@ I doubt it because the bug lives between the layers of the leaves, not outside or on it🤔
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Жыл бұрын
I'm not entirely sure, since the larvae are living inside the leaves. I've had mixed results with DE, because it blows off the leaves so quickly. The pyrethrin does a better job sticking and penetrating. You could try it, but DE isn't a true insecticide. It is a remedy, so it certainly won't eliminate the problem. Pyrethrin is a true insecticide.

What's the point of the pyrethrin spray if you say you have to trash or burn any infected foliage, and repeat the pruning process every 7 days? That makes it sound like the spray doesn't do anything to stop the infestation.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Жыл бұрын
Pyrethrin is a contact killer. It will kill the insects on-contact. It will not kill any insects you miss by the spray, and it will not necessarily kill eggs that haven't hatched. Insecticides never get rid of a problem with one application, because there will always be a certain percentage that you miss in the treatment, and the next round of eggs will hatch and repopulate the plants. That is why you must repeat applications - you need to break the reproductive cycle. There are no treatments that eliminate everything with one application.

Would omri spinosad work as well? Don't like to use pyrethrin since I have cats. What if you only sprayed pyrethrin without pruning? Some of my plants aren't easily accessible since they are close together (small yard).
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Жыл бұрын
Yes, spinosad will work, but you need to spray it on a dry evening so the plants stay wet. The insects have to consume the leaves soaked in the spinosad. It is not a true contact killer like pyrethrin. I would make sure to prune off the damaged leaves, because they may be harboring pest eggs.
