So helpful. I've watched several videos and have sort of learned it but it made no sense to me so it was hard to remember. Your clue about the yarn on top being the key to which section of yarn to grab--this made the process more understandable for me, and hopefully I can even remember it.

Great cast-on, I have been knitting since I was a kid and never saw this cast-on...but then we did not have Internet!! Very clear video, I will definitely try this for my next project as it starts at top with a rib turtle neck and this would be perfect for that

I had just watched another tutorial on this cast on and I kept hitting pause/replay. I ended up trying twice with the other video and kept getting mixed up with which to grab. One try with your video and I did it in one try just because you said 'where the yarn is resting'. It made all the difference, however, my first knit stitch after joining and I accidentally dropped it 😥 now I have two purls in the first two stitches and I have no idea how to fix it. I'd rather not undo all 108 cast on stitches. And would you recommend using a (circular) needle size smaller? I am making a stranded colour headband.

@3CDesigns6 жыл бұрын
Thank you soooooo much! I have looked at numerous videos for this technique and just couldn't get it! Your video had just the right cues, went slow enough for me to follow and HURRAY! I did it! I am a new knitter. I am left hand dominant but I am knitting right handed, while I crochet left handed! I do certain things with my left hand, others with my right. It can get very, very confusing! Anyways, this hat is just beautiful! Love it! Can't wait to give it a try!

I guess I've been under a rock, as I just discovered your youtube channel today. I have foregone using the Italian Cast On in the past because I just couldn't quite 'get' it from watching the tutorial videos I found. You simplified it to the Nth degree. I'll never skip doing it again! This has nothing to do with your video, but I've noticed in the different ones of yours that I've watched today, that your lips look the same, and I LOVE your lipstick. Any chance you'd share what it is?

Hi Marly, If I need to work K2,P2 per pattern instructions do I cast on two times from each side?
@michalmangiameli2403 жыл бұрын
Why is this so hard for me 😭 I’ve watched so many videos and this is the one that makes the most sense to me. I’ve only ever done long tailed cast ons so wish me luck! 😂
I run into trouble when casting on with multiple stitches such as for hat, sweater. They are on the cord & not the stable needle, they twist like crazy.

I am doing it in the round but 44 cast on it looks so small does it get bigger?? I did the crochet one it came out beautiful now I am doing in knit but I find the head so small
@MarlyBird5 жыл бұрын
Are you making the knit snowboarder hat? Are you using the jumbo yarn? If the size of the hat is smaller than you like you can always add a few stitches, but yes, the knit snowboarder hat is a little smaller than the crochet one ;-)
@gabbyferreira47865 жыл бұрын
Yes I am doing the knit one now but it’s kind of small, how many do I cast on ? Cuz I don’t want it to big either, the crochet one was perfect, now everyone wants one but I love to try the knit one too, I am using red heart grande , or am I using the wrong one? Thank you

If I want to use this to start a Fisherman's Rib, do I start it right after the casting-on row? Or do i use your first row after casting on, and then start Fisherman's? Does it matter? :) Thanks!
@MarlyBird6 жыл бұрын
Monelle Richmond you can transition directly into brioche from here. For fisherman’s rib, no because you knit in the row below the stitch on the needle every other stitch. So you would want to work one row in ribbing then transition to fisherman rib :)

Yes, i worked it out later. Lover you videos, and thank you! :)

Is this the same as a "Tubular Cast On" ?
@fluffycloud63466 жыл бұрын
How can you adapt this for 2x2 ribbing?
@andychen73906 жыл бұрын
To work 2x2 in this cast on, you need to work the cast on normally for 1x1 then do the tubular set up. I know that in the video, Marly doesn't show it but I highly recommend it if you want the cast on to be elastic and it's mandatory if you want to do 2x2 ribbing. The tubular set up is simply knitting all the knit stitches and slipping all the purl stitches with the yarn in front. Do that for 4 rows. On the following row, knit the first stitch, slip the next purl stitch and hold it on the back, as if you were doing a cable. Knit the next stitch, then move the slipped stitch onto the left hand needle and purl 2. Repeat those steps to the end of the row. It's very labor intensive, but it's the only way. You aren't able to cast on 2 knit stitches next to each other and likewise, you can't cast on 2 purl stitches next to each other as well, due to the way the cast on is structured. I hope that helps!
@DebraKilsheimer6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this video! Can't wait to make this hat. I'd like to know if you have 2x2 ribbing or 3x1, do you change the cast on for a 2x2 to make 2 purls, 2 knits stitches or for a 3x1, 3 knits and 1 purl? Or is it always this 1x1 knit purl cast on. Hope I am making sense! Love your videos!
@andychen73906 жыл бұрын
3x1 requires decreasing, so I wouldn't recommend 3x1 ribbing. To work 2x2, you need to rearrange stitches. Now, in the video, Marly didn't work a tubular set up, but I would highly recommend it to add elasticity to the cast on. All you do is knit all the knit stitches and slip all purl stitches with the yarn in front. Do that for 4 rows, then what you do is you knit a knit stitch, then slip the next purl stitch off and hold it in the back. Knit the next stitch, move the slipped purl stitch back on to the left hand needle and purl 2. Repeat that sequence to the end. It's labor intensive, but it's worth it.

I have what's probably a silly question, but here goes: You said to leave a tail that's about 3 times the length of the cast on. How do you know how long the cast-on is before you do it? I'm confused!!
@MarlyBird6 жыл бұрын
For example: The circumference of the hat is 22”. So your tail should be approx 66”.
@heatherkent48136 жыл бұрын
I got the cast on part thanks to this video but after that I'm confused. Do I join or turn and work flat and, How do I do the join?
@MarlyBird6 жыл бұрын
That all depends on what you are making.
@heatherkent48136 жыл бұрын
@@MarlyBird I am making the snowboarder chunky hat on circular needles. Very beginner, just a little confused by instructions in the video. The pattern says join then knit 1st stitch. In the video you have us turning then purl 1st stich.
@MarlyBird6 жыл бұрын
When you join for the snowboarder hat, the first stitch will be knit. If you are making the hat flat then the first stitch after you turn is a purl. Does that make sense? If you still end up having trouble, you can always start with a basic long tail cast on and jump into the snowboarder pattern as well...it will still get a really nice hat :-)
@heatherkent48136 жыл бұрын
@@MarlyBird Thank you for taking the time to clarify that for me. It makes way more sense now.

Love love love your tutorials on stitches and patterns!! You are an awesome instructor! And your techniques are so clear and precise and easy to follow. I’ve been knitting for over 30 yrs and have still learned so much!! Just one negative- I can’t STAND your intro music! Awful! It really grates on my nerves. So incongruent with the topic of knitting. I’m not an old spinster- grew up in the 60’s so I love lots of types of music even Tupac, but the music for your channel is awful. Sorry. Just my opinion, I could be wrong. Thanks for your KZbin channel. I’m a subscriber. I’ll keep watching. 🧦🧤🧣🛍

Marly the only complaint I have about this tutorial is that you use a continental style of knitting which makes it difficult to translate to English style.
@MarlyBird5 жыл бұрын
If you knit English or continental the actual knitting is the same. The yarn is just in a different hand.
