Stacy Lyn Harris it’s unfortunate that the raw vid isn’t available anymore. Personally I wouldn’t have added the music, but that’s my opinion. Others like it... I must say, that the idea on “scientifically” choosing/evaluating the “goodness” of a watermelon is intriguing/interesting. I’m just at an age where my hearing gets conflicted when there’s music and talk going on at the same time and it ends up as tone-salad; hardly able to tell what is what...
@garivera157 жыл бұрын
I can't for the life of me understand why it's necessary to add music to a video. It's usually too loud and just as in the case of this video it sounds like you're trying to talk over the music to be heard...and I'd like to hear what you're trying to teach but I can't and won't turn up the music to try and hear you speak louder. So I suggest next time you put a video together skip the music and just teach from your heart. I could only take 36 seconds of unnecessary music and I had to stop and type (instead).

Mainly 90% is the how the batch of watermelons are overall. I have worked 40 years in the business and if a bin comes in with good melons they are all usually good or all usually bad. The only empirically scientific way to get a better melon is to hit one side and put you hand on the other side feeling for a vibration, or a hollow sound. This is an indicator that the inside is crisp, crunchy and not mushy or over ripe. The down side is it only prevents you from buying a bad one but crisp doesn't mean it will be red ripe. But you now have increased your odds to buy an edible melon. Look for melons that don't have a green stem. A yellow bottom means the melon got good sunlight. That's the best you can do other than ask how they are coming in:)

The another method is to measure the "roundness" of the Watermelon overall or say more symmetric at top and at the bottom compared to the fruits of the same field.

Save some time and after you plug the watermelon just taste them to see which is best, lol. One of my first jobs I had was in a grocery store in the 1960's and back then it was common to plug the watermelon to taste before buying. I find that a majority of watermelons at markets today are not that sweet. I don't know if it's because they are picked too early or if it's because seedless varieties just are not as good. I tend to think it's because they are picked too early just like the rest of the tasteless fruits that are in markets today. Gotta feel sorry for those who have never tasted a tree or vine ripened fruit.
@monomer29 жыл бұрын
+Don L Yes, I believe you are right, melons sent to market are picked too early and unfortunately melons do not finish ripening on the store shelves as say a tomato or a mango would. The grocer needs to buy in large quantities to amortize shipping and to get the best wholesale prices therefore the melons from that large shipment must be able to sit on the store shelf for weeks until sold. Often excess is kept refrigerated to extend this shelf time. Bottom line is large markets purchasing out of season from far away will sell melons picked too early for economic reasons and therefore will never be sweet. Unfortunately too many varieties of other fruits and vegetables are often not selected for flavor but rather for economic reasons... size and quick growth thereby many intentionally have greater water content and thus less flavorful. That's why I now shop local farmer's markets and also grow a garden in the summer. We purchase fruits and vegetables when in season and try to freeze the excess for out of season.

If you want a video of the same melons, different sized melons, melons with their own forks, control melons, etc... then do your own experiment. Guess I didn’t have an issue with the music. Some people have to complain about something. Was a great experiment on determining how to select a melon. We used to grow watermelons, and we always go with the sound or pitch when you tap or knock on it and heaviness, of course its different if its harvest time because we know when we planted it, also the more you dont open them right away it will overripe with time eventually the texture inside change then rot. Another way for us to know if its ripe, from the vine connected to the watermelon there is this curl like hair kinda look like root attach to the vine that if this turns from bright green to faded green or almost dried up, then its its already ripe.

Broom straw test is bogus. Looks impressive. Amazing to watch as it happens. Stumped me till I tried it myself to see. The straw will invariability be slightly curved. The watermelon is curved. When the straw is untethered (only touching the melon at one point) and free to pivot, the straw (larger curve) will naturally "slide down hill" off the slick surface of the melon (smaller curve) to the single point of least contact. Straw could swing up or down. It does not " *care* ." (Video makers learned they had to keep trying till they found a melon/straw combination which acted as they wanted.

That was really interesting. The watermelon is probably the hardest of melons to judge. I grow other types of melon which I either judge by the change in fragrance (as I enter the greenhouse, it can be overwhelming when ripe), some liquid coming from the stem or the pressure test. Others say about the tendril condition as an indicator. However, none of that helps with watermelon. You both did a comprehensive assessment there, but I was willing the straw test to be right! Thanks, guys!

The best method is to hold the melon up to your ear with one hand, and thump it with the other hand, listening to the tone of the sound. The higher the sound the more unripe. If it has a low dull thud then it's over ripe. There is an optimum sound, a kind of middle tone ringing frequency. Try it---you will quickly become expert at it.

Tino Guanlao ....I could agree more. Plus there was a lot of rambling during the board review.

How do you explain the fractomitor showing 5 of the six having the exact same sugar content, yet the taste test seems to controdict those numbers?

Just check to see if the nearest tendril is dried up. If it is, then it's ripe. Easy peasy.

Don't have tendril in the shop watermelons. The method shown here will help you choose in the shop, while yours will help you pick from the garden.

Alabam' born and raised, grew up with watermelon "fights," and sprinkled salt on the 'melon when eating it. We used the pitch method, according to the following standard: thump your head, your chest, your stomach. Then thump the watermelon. If it sounds like the chest sound, then it will be delicious (the 'melon, not the chest!).

The coloring can be different based on the variety of watermelon. Some are light green some are almost black and some are yellow orange when ripe, that is just the outside!

You can drop the music--too loud and annoying. Otherwise the dialog was inteŕesting.

That was absolutely fun, Stacy. I guess the bottom line is, grow your own watermelon and let them ripen on the vine, dark green with yellow on the bottom and a good, low "thump"! 😁
