The word crisis is defined as "a time of intense difficulty, trouble, or danger." We hear the term used all the time, especially in the news to describe an economic crisis or a humanitarian crisis.. Or a million other things happening in our world. But when it comes to our mental health we are in "crisis" when we are unable to function in our life. Meaning that we can't do what we need to at work or school, we aren't able to take care of our basic needs like eating regularly, drinking water, and showering a few times a week, and we could be isolating from those we care about. I know that that doesn't seem intense enough to be deemed a crisis, but if you think about it, if we aren't functioning that's cause for concern and means we need to reach out for help.
I'm Kati Morton, a licensed therapist making Mental Health videos!

@@Katimorton I have a question. I will see a therapist in 2 months, but I'm not sure if I can wait that long, bc I can't live this way anymore. I can't do school, but need to, I cant sleep, can't eat enough and have intense suicidal thoughts. And that for weeks now and its the 2nd time Its like this. What should I do? I'm near completely breaking. Edit: I'm sorry I ask here I just wasn't sure where to do that else.

Hello just seen your comment here,on kati s video and straight away wanted to say hello and I like and can relate to your comment too I am from the uk iv only been in therapy once so far in my life but I was lucky is was free but sadly the therapy I was given was short only 1 day a week and the length of therapy was short but yes I can understand some therapy is to be paid for like online therapy is only for payments it a shame and sad that people like you need ans want therapy but its expensive just being friendly and saying take care

I was in crisis about a year ago and ended up in the hospital because of it. It was one of the best things to happen to me in 2020. I hated almost every moment of my hospitalization, but the support and diagnosis I gained from it were invaluable. Things can get better, take it from someone who knows.

Thanks Katie. I've always felt like crisis was to the point of suicidal. You really hit me today. I have been the primary caregiver for my son for the last 7 years. He was in a car accident his freshman year of college and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. He is still in a state of minimal consciousness. I'm in therapy and my therapist has encouraged me to contact him if "I'm in crisis." Cancelled our video session today because I just couldn't deal. I stay in my room all weekend just laying in bed doing nothing, no reading, TV, just racing thoughts. Haven't showered in a week and hate myself and everyone else. Sorry for the long post. Just wanted Katie to know how much her video helped. Already left a message for my therapist.

Interesting to hear this when in the UK it's only deemed a crisis if you're actively suicidal, and then it's not treated as such unless you actually attempt suicide. Even then, you get no help most of the time. So it's validating to hear this but also difficult to hear, knowing the people who should be offering the help are not doing so.

I didn't realise, but I've been in escalating crisis for months. I am either constantly irritable, withdrawn or asleep (for relief). I keep forgetting to pay bills and I'm unable to fulfil work obligations. I make up excuses for my absence and have also stopped taking work as I know I'll end up not doing it. I don't eat all day, until dinner. I'm just not hungry. I have no motivation, no enjoyment. I've stopped keeping in touch with certain good friends who are overseas or interstate, because I just lose track of time. Weeks go by and I don't notice. I stay up until after 3am and sleep until 1pm. Even then, I fall asleep on the couch in the early evening. I have never been able to deal with regular showering. For a while I was "stable" and would shower 3 times a week. Over the past few years though, I can't do it. Once every 2 weeks (I know it's embarrassing, but honestly I don't care anymore). I only do laundry once a month. I used to do it once a week. Lucky I have a lot of clothes. I cannot ever cope with housework. At all. Just no. I don't want to die. I just don't want to...be. Not like this. (I've had therapy on and off for 20 years, been on many medications, had various tests, but nothing helps.)

Thank you Kati, I think the stigma of having mental health issues has lessened over the last years so that people reach out for help. Unfortunately what help is available hasn't caught up. More needs to be done so people can get the help they need. That's so easy to say, so difficult for governments to find the will to do.

One thing that has helped me is making a list for my therapist about what I need to talk about and let them bring it up. For example maybe list something like intrusive thoughts or in crisis. At the start of the session you can give your list to your therapist.

Thank you for articulating this. I guess I'm in crisis. I would like to add, though, that sometimes the resources we are directed to aren't helpful. "Call a crisis line." That would be great, except the crisis line always sends me to the hospital. Which would be fine, except the hospital is very familiar with me and usually turns me out. If I am admitted, I'm labeled "hospital dependent" and ridiculed by the nurses for being there again. One actually told me not to call the crisis line anymore because I know it will result in an ER visit and I should know better than that. Honestly, I'm so tired of the system and feel so unsupported by the people who are supposed to offer help. I would LOVE to reach out but it almost always results in rejection. I don't really know what to do in this situation, except try to hold myself together on my own.

I was in serious crisis mode this weekend and my problem (other than the crisis) is that I don't remember that I can ask for help. I have an appointment with my therapist tomorrow and I know she will (gently) chastise me.

so I guess this kinda confirms I’ve been in an actual crisis for five or six years or something, a whole lot of intense dissociation and stuff.. Well, it has been getting better in the past month after I met my now-bf who’s been helping a lot, things are finally showing signs of genuinely improving and it makes me happy even though 99% of the time I don’t really know what’s going on or who I am because of my issues Wrote a bit of a rant there but it’s relaxing to just talk about my situation like this to nobody in particular - anyway, love your videos Kati, they’ve helped me with confronting my issues that I’d otherwise avoid and better understanding them, peace ✨

First of all: Thanks for the video. It definitely sounds like I'm in crisis and have been for a long time and now just live in that mode. Reaching out for help really is hard, because there's the mental trap, where I can't see how I won't waste that help if it's given to me, because I don't have the mental energy needed to do what I have to do to get to a better place and perhaps I don't "want" to get better enough, because there's a certain comfort in being used to the current crisis mode, even if it chips away at me a little bit every day. I am in contact with a psychologist, but it wasn't really me that reached out, which I think is a key point. It was via something else, to test if I'm in the autistic spectrum or not, where I'm to see a therapist and an autism expert 10 times. Due to covid-19 it's being postponed again and again. I'm doing alright atm but it can change quickly depending on little or bigger things going wrong during the day. Also I'm sorry that I pop up every few months in the comments to what feels like "just venting", without being good at doing something about it in RL, but I'm stuck and have been for a long time, so I can definitely relate to the "intense difficulty" part of the definition of the word "crisis". I'm tearing up to the best of my ability as I write this, which isn't much, so it hits some kind of spot, but the flood gates stay shut.

I’ve been in crisis awhile now. Something someone said made a lot of sense- when our anxiety is high, our body essentially thinks we are being chased by a tiger or something. It’s time to fight or flight and get away from what’s causing this! So of course when your body is in that state and your husband says “hey did you get milk at the store?”, it’s SO easy to lash out because “why is he thinking of milk at a time like this?! We are in danger here!” It made SO much sense when it was put like that. High anxiety, but acute AND chronic are crisis states in my mind.

I can somewhat understand this. I've felt the same way and I've finally found something that works for me. I didn't think there was any hope and that I was just stuck being this miserable for forever. Please know that there are so many treatment options out there. Sometimes therapy just doesn't cut it so you have to add medicine which is totally fine! I think the best thing you can do if you're not feeling any better is to be vocal about it and ask what other options there are. I truly hope you find what works for you and just know that it can get better.

Hi Kati, I was dx’d with schizophrenia in 1997 & highly medicated for decades-‘maintained’ in the community.7 yrs of depixol I.M. Depot, Stelazine (I had marked dystonic reaction with this that traumatised me!), Largactal, melleril olanzapine, (suffering TD ongoing now!) finishing on 20yrs of quetiapine plus other meds for anxiety, depression & sleep…I was a ‘zombie’ due to these meds for 30yrs. After a while my dx was noted as ‘chronic paranoid schizophrenia’. 4 1/2 yes ago I changed mh teams due to a move. After being on the end of gaslighting, bullying and utter contempt from these mh professionals they discharged me to a gp I had not yet met (for 1xmonthly 10 min appointments instead of a mh team.)She doesn’t know what to do with me! Nor do I! I stopped all meds when discharged from services. I no longer have trust in mh services and have lost 30 yrs to polydrugging plus 10-15 yrs from my life span due to it. It’s pretty shit. Can you say any kind or reassuring words for me please. I am often in crisis. Thank you.

I was saying to myself that I'm going through something similar to a midlife crisis, whilst being 22, I then learned that there is actually a type of crisis called "adolescent crisis". It revolves mostly around a self identity crisis in early life.

That was the perfect timing for me, thanks for making this video! What I struggle with concerning reaching out is that for some reason, it feels like if I ask for help, I don't really need it so I feel like I'm faking. Like if I really needed help I would just try to commit suicide or in some other way break down so that others saw it without me asking.. I know that's not right, but it's a hard thing to get over.
