Hey guys!
Today I wanted to finally create a video explanation on where you should dodge and burn on skin tones in Photoshop. It's not a very easy topic to explain, and it does cover several topics! So I hope I did it justice.
If you do have any questions about dodging and burning, let me know in the comments section below! :)

Getting 5K 27'' monitor improved my retouching by 90%. From not being able to see very much I was able to see everything... When retouching my photo's most of the work is done on the dodge layer using a channel mixer layer on monochrome. On the burn layer I mainly focus on the large patchy areas. I have found that over doing it with the burn layer can remove too much texture making the person looking like a doll.

These are some great tips! For deeper skin tones though I wouldn't recommend primarily working on a dodge layer as it will generally lighten the appearance of their skin tone overall. I think usually a good combination of both and knowing the balance between both layers is a great place to start! 🙂

I thought I saw a retouch video where they used a black and white layer to make it easier to see where you needed to dodge, but I can't remember which video it was or what they did exactly. Anyone remember this technique of making a black and white layer or another filter that allows you to see the dark areas that need to be dodged?

I do same...i create a black and white adjustment layer over my Dodge and burn group folder and tweak the red and yellow sliders till i can see a lot of the areas to DB easily.

Hi Kayleigh! Great video. Very helpful. Quick question, did you ever get discouraged while learning to retouch? Or feel like even though you understand and applied the actions to your retouching, you were missing something or not skilled enough to get the results you wanted? I'm going through that now and it really bothers me. I have created actions and tried so many different techniques for retouching but I'm still not getting the high end results that I want to achieve. I really just feel like I'm missing something.

Hi Angela! Thanks so much for your comment. ❤ This is something that I've experienced time and time again! I think as creators we all feel this way at some point or another. I feel that sometimes this all comes along with repetition and practice, particularly retouching. But as always, if you feel like you're not getting those high-end results keep soaking in as much education online as possible, you'll get there! I'm not sure if I've recommended them to you before, but the retouching academy is an amazing place to get more information on the subject! retouchingacademy.com/

@@KayleighJune thanks Kayleigh. I've been reading up on the retouching academy tips and tricks since I took a day off from retouch practice. I've taken some notes and I'm going to try to practice more and get better. I'm happy to know I'm not alone in having felt this way and I feel I can get past it. I really appreciate your words. Thanks again!

Are those people who are telling you to use specific courses, the people who have a specific photoshop course by any chance!? Having said that, I do think the issue with KZbin is that you hear and see so many different techniques it can be confusing. You also have to piece everything together yourself. The benefit of using a course is you can learn it in a structured way. I am a member of SkillShare and most of the people offering tutorials on there are a waste of time.

It’s really up to you. I follow a lot of retouchers that didn’t take any courses but found free information on the internet, and they’re doing fairly decent retouches. Courses are just more organized and you don’t have to try out like 20 different techniques of how to do something

I learnt 80% of my photography and retouch off youtube. Where i am from, paying for courses in dollars will cost an arm and a leg and your covid vaccine card. The other 20% from books and practice.

I always put my Dodge layer on top of my Burn layer, but I`ve noticed that a lot of retouchers do the opposite. Is there any theory behind that choise or is it just a personal preference? For me it`s more like psycological - the light is above and the dark is below.
@KayleighJune
@KayleighJune 4 жыл бұрын
I actually do the same thing as you! Usually I put dodge at the top and burn at the bottom. I don't feel there's any specific reason for this other than what you've mentioned, I guess it just makes sense to have highlights at the top above shadows?? Haha 😂
@Adriana.Gabriela
@Adriana.Gabriela 4 жыл бұрын
It might be bcs it's called dodge&burn (not burn&dodge), so people probably usually make the dodge layer first. So the burn layer ends up on top bcs it's the second one. That's how I automatically started making them (although I usually start burning first, and then go down to dodge layer and start dodging 😂)
