How to know where to punch the slot for a cat bottle opener?

How does a blacksmith know where to punch the slot for a bottle opener? We mark the metal! But that mark has to survive the metal being yellow hot and we need to see it! I show one method, using a center punch, to mark where I need to forge a particular feature.
