It’s due to what it’s made of. A true antique would be made of a heavier, sturdier wood made to last decades.

When I was pregnant with my 10 year old, my grandfather gave me his mother's rocking chair and my dad completely refinished it in cherry to go with my daughter's crib. Later, I had also inherited my grandmother's mother's folding rocking chair from the early 1920s. She was only 4'11" and it was made for her, so it was little, but in only 5'1" so it's The perfect size. The fabric wasn't in good shape and one leg was broken in half, so I left it with my parents when I was moving between apartments and kind of forgot they even had it. That Christmas, they gave it back. My dad had restored all of the wood and fixed the break. You couldn't even tell after he refinished it all! My mother redid the upholstery. It was just beautiful. I thought it was in my storage unit with my other furniture so my mind was extra blown. I still have both.

Do I ever go antiques shopping? No. Do I buy furniture? Not really. If I had bought old furniture would I lacquer it? Probably not. Do I want to learn or do I care about knowing how to lacquer? No way. Am I willing to listen to 20 minutes of John talking about furniture and how to lacquer just because his voice is heaven, and his pronunciation is everything that is right in this world, and I just think that whatever he says is crucial to my life? Hell yeahh!!!!

I once made a ball of wood with my grandpa and he encarved my lucky number in it. I remember lacquering it so thickly I almost passed out from the fumes xD. After I filed it down it looked so elegant I decided It would be what I pass on to my children. Filing a sphere so it looks smooth was hell on earth it took me 4 days to make it even, (I eventually ended up with an almost smooth paper to have the finest grain ^^). Today I'm 20, it was 7 years ago but I'm still so proud of myself, It was the first time in my life I showed so much patience and effort on something, trully changed my mind. :D

Oh, a man of my own heart. I enjoy makeup, furniture and home restoration, anything artistic such as paintings and drawings or sculptures... I enjoy things a person can find beauty in. I also enjoy gardening and love animals. You come off as educated, refined and as someone who enjoys making things lovely/lovelier. I would very much enjoy a future film about the process of epoxy coating the top of the table! I could probably watch you in films doing or talking about nearly anything, but I enjoy films or instructional demonstrations on fixing or restoring items. This was wonderful 💕

Stacey Sabot lol😂 I'll be far too busy shopping to acquire everything that is required to lacquer my furniture so it is seamless, all whilst awaiting for John to upload part 2 of this fil'um and tutorial. But I do sincerely have a deep appreciation for your supportive concern. It has had a profound affect on my ability to deal with the emotions that often do come as a result of one's failures. Accepting ones shortcomings is a natural and necessary task in the growth of one's being. I bid to you a marvelous weekend and do take care xx

John, please do a lot more furniture videos! They’re great to view and I must say, one loves the detail and depth you go into describing the process. Such a shame to see a lot of beautiful pieces going to waste and I highly approve of people repairing these timeless classics. I’m quite a prude when it comes to furniture I shall admit. The youngest furniture I’d go for is most likely the 1960’s. I do have quite a soft spot for the Art Deco period. I’m currently restoring a gorgeous 1940’s cabinet which houses a record player and a radio, outstanding craftsman which has unfortunately been neglected. I find my young self having recently bought a home buying a lot of projects. I look forward to your future endeavours!

You are helping me get back to refinement and are such a blessing. What an amazing looking piece of furniture. You have taken me back to my childhood because my Great Great Grandfather(from Cullen) was a carpenter and built many beautiful pieces of antiques for Hotels and for their own home. Thank you so very much for this as I am so keen to learn what my Great Great Grandfather did. I too think it's very sad that there are so many sacred antiques just thrown either to 2nd hand shop's or forgotten about. I myself love the antique dresser I have and my drawers. I'm loving your tutorial because I'm on the lookout for certain pieces then try and do the lacquer process you have shown. I would absolutely love love love to see your own works of art..that would be such a special treat. With love and Kindest regards Luna..Namaste ❤🙏🌹

What a wonderful tutorial, thank you! And very smart to lacquer a repro: many antiques have been ruined, and lost their value, due to refinishing. It's the patina and history of the piece that makes it worth so much. Cheers♡
