I started around the same time this comment was posted. I've understood different formulas and specialist genres (emails, sales pages, landing pages etc) I've made plenty of social media pages to show a level of professionalism with lots of content Now I'm trying to learn how to outreach. Very slow progress ik but based on what I've done, this guy must be doing well after 6 months

Christine consistently provides the very BEST real-world advice drawn from her own experiences / challenges. These are like mini courses in and of themselves. I'm saving up to take her program. My situation: Currently, I'm writing copy? Years ago, I reached out to an "influencer" in the personal development space (she sells online writing courses, self-love programs, personal development courses etc...) Anyway, currently I create inspirational quote posts on Canva and write "copy" to direct potential clients to our landing pages. It's not copy on the same scale AT ALL, but I really love creating and scheduling posts. I've been doing this for her on my free time for years now but I want to "level up" to actual copy. I could leverage this experience on Linkedin, but afraid its woefully insufficient. Anyway, here we are.

The real estate market collapsed here in the midwest ruining my 25 years of real estate appraisal so I considered my talents and realized I have been writing since I was a teenager. Poetry, short stories, and a couple of unpublished books fed my passion for words. I am in the early stages of opening a blog. I intend to build from that.

Hey Christine, I like your practical advice about getting a leg up as a freelancer. I recently lost my clients and want to get back in the game. I’m 75 going on 18 and would just like to get enough work to keep my head above water as inflation starts eating into my retirement check. As you said, “It’s a numbers game.” Most of my forays at cold pitching and applying to companies have been lackluster and haven’t produced any progeny. Maybe it’s just me, but I think there’s a reluctance to take on an older writer. The client may think that I’ll contract Alzheimer’s or just drop dead. My intention is to hang around until I’m in my 120s. The niche I like is tech and the audience is B2B. I’m open to anything at this stage in my writing life. How can I break through the glass ceiling during this disruptive period of ChatGPT automatons? Thanks for sharing your story and experiences because it keeps me from just giving up on this opportunity.

So many insights in one video. Thank you so much, Christine. Oh, my situation? I'm currently doing a part-time job for real estate but I've been studying freelancing for the past few months so I could eventually land a client and go full time. I've just finished learning how to become a Video Editor as well as a Project Manager. However, my love for words is leading me to become a Copywriter, hence, I'm a constant viewer of your videos. I'm planning, too, to get your course, I just need to get some clients first for my real estate job to secure my next year's finances. By the way, I'm a Christian, too! My wife and I want to hit the road with a Truck and fifth wheel camper and write to pay us both as we travel. It gives the flexibility and money to do whatever we want. We have a 6 month window to get this thing kicked in high gear and either sell our property or make enough money with writing to get me out of a job and come home with her and both kill it. I have sales experience and metal working experience also. Was hoping to write for some companies that have welding machines or welding instructions etc. may not be a lot of people doing this. Open field possibly. She was looking at holistic and homesteading. Thanks for the info. Well done. We got a lot out of the video.

I used to work for an agency and probably the reason why their big clients see them as "disposable", like you said, is because well for one, they pay a ton of money so maybe feel like they can treat the agency however they want, but mainly it's because many big agencies have such a high turnover rate that the big company/client often doesn't have a relationship with 1 or more people for very long, even on retainer work. With people cycling in and out there's not a long lasting relationship there, in the way there would be w/a freelance writer. That is my rant lol. Anyway very helpful video Christine, I'm new to the channel and am loving it.

Hi Christine, I'm working FT and on pause from school for a year. Work pays well, but it is not enough to sustain me with student and consumer debt. My writing skills are good and I can sift through articles to get the jist. I'm doing as much research so I can get started like yesterday. I'm pushing myself not to chicken out. Most copywriters I have come across say to just start even if you feel like it will not be perfect. So, that's what I'm telling myself that I can mirror similar content and refine myself as I go. Feeling uber nervous because I desire to scale up quickly.

Did you say you went from a completely unrelated career which was Sales??? 🤔 Copywriting IS sales! At least direct response copywriting is. It’s the ability to move someone to a sale from behind a computer screen. It’s sales in written form as opposed to in-person, spoken form. I don’t leave this comment to be rude or condescending, not at all. This was a really informative video. That comment just surprised me.

I appreciate the fact you're setting standards for yourself. And too agreeable people are walked over and mistreated. Facts. But at the same time I sense that the clients you've worked with also thought you were difficult to work with. For example, ''Only one revision.'' right off the bat like that? Hmm... And if am charging 200$+ / hour I do expect my work to be exquisite and be heavily looked at. I need to justify it. For me thats normal. I understand your point though. There are plenty of companies & agencies out there trying to exploit freelancers so you want to show you're not to be messed with. Fine. I can be disagreeable too. But I believe that approach will do my business more harm than good in the long run. I think your strategy is efficiency: maximum price, minimum effort. You want to work minimally to enjoy other parts of your life. But quality of work won't be high enough and customers will complain. If I used that approach it will limit my growth too much as a business owner and writer, I will have very few returning customers and will be denied too many opportunities because industry is small and people talk.

Thanks for your comment! Maybe my explanation on boundary setting comes across as harsh when I explain it but I'm actually very hospitable to my clients. I also give them my all to ensure I have a high quality output so I wouldn't agree that my approach is minimum effort. While treating clients well and going above and beyond is necessary to retain clients, I find that freelance writers who consume my content are super meek and don't feel confident enough to hold boundaries

Break down tasks into manageable chunks. Create your portfolio, set up your blog, and start reaching out to potential clients. Celebrate each milestone along the way! Remember, past failures don't define your future success. Learn from them and use that knowledge to grow. And don't forget, you're not alone in this journey. Great info for sure. I have been scouring all the social media platforms for good info on copywriting and came across your channel. I have been a published freelance writer for over 20 years. I have a good profile page, I have a LinkedIn account which is all business, I don't do FaceBook, ( got hacked way too much), and I an the owner of a former website that I owned, operated and provided the content for as well. So, you can say I have been around awhile. My "niche" is outdoor writing specialized in freshwater fishing in all of Southern California. I have also provided some well producing copy for a few fishing lures companies in the past. The problem I am having is finding clients in that niche to write copy for. I cannot find any agencies that cater to the fishing industry which is freaking huge! Any suggestions? Thanks.

@paidcopwriter Would you consider yelp to look for businesses in a particular niche?

absolutely - any directory, list, or database can be used to gather your "ideal list of clients" depending on what type of businesses you want to target

I need to point something out though. You said your background it’s not at all related to copywriting and then you mentioned Sales.. Sorry but Robert Bly himself states that a copywriter is a Salesman behind a typewriter.. So definetively MASSIVE advantage there

Sure. What I mean by "unrelated" is that no content manager or marketing manager was willing to give me a chance as a copywriter with a straight sales resume. I needed to market myself and my background in a certain way and build my portfolio from scratch to make a pivot. Anyone who has customer-facing experience (retail, hospitality, etc) has an "advantage" and many of my students pivoted from unrelated careers that had 0 to do with sales
