Here I cover valve lapping on a Jeep Wrangler inline 6. The valve lapping process is the same on most all engine heads. This video is intended to show how a beginner can lap their own valves. If you have severe pitting, as I do on these valves, you are best off getting new valves seated at a machine shop. I hope it helps you out.

I think you did the lapping as good as it could possibly be done. I’d still recommend a full valve job to you. Now that you’ve got the lapping down, disassemble the new valve job and lap the new valve and seat grinds one pass coarse and fine to seat them perfectly. One thing I’d recommend though, regardless if you get new guides or not, but after you remove each valve during the lapping, I would spray down the valve, seat and guide with brake cleaner, especially the guide between each application of new oil and compound. I wouldn’t risk any compound getting on the valve stem or in the guides. After all the machining and cleaning, no matter what method, scrub down every nook and cranny of the head with HOT soapy water, rinse and dry. One tip I’ve learned about drying ferrous metal is do as much of the drying with towels immediately. Don’t just let them air dry or use compressed air alone. Instant rust will form if you air dry alone. Use compressed air at the very end to dry the tight spots. Mask and paint and you’ll be very happy with your efforts.

I chuck the valves in a drill press and clean them with a wire brush in a drill. It's a great precleaning to lapping. The suction cup is the best way, you get a feel that the valves are seating. When done clean with brakeclean, oil the stems and assemble. To check I fill the chambers with a fluid and blow compressed air into the ports. There should be 0 bubbles. If there is keep lapping till there isn't. I've been doing this for more than 30 years without a problem.

Tip for even better result: after fine compound, do it a little while without any compound, until the valve make kinda crying sound. It'll polish both surfaces further, and won't leave much microscopic holes to get carbon.

@ Jeepsolid, those valves did clean up well, but the valve seat is to worn on the angle face. If you look at the lapping mark the cutting line is to close to the edge of the valve, this will cause you to burn up a valve. But method is to have the valve seat cut at a 46 degree and then have the valve cut a 45 follow by a new lap job. This will cause the valve to seat in the middle of the seat. Best of luck

I think that if you glued a magnet to the suction cup it is less likely to be safe, I will try it in my next project.
@petericho71
@petericho71 4 жыл бұрын
You could just glue a magnet to a cut down broom handle, but I would imagine that you won't be able to rotate the valve as it will also be magnetised to the seat, in the same way a bunch of paperclips stick together when picked up with a magnet. I'm very interested how you go with this.

The real fix would be to investigate why although 150k I think that's pretty good considering. Bad stock oil rings and lots of blow by is a good place to start. Install a catch can while you're at it 👍

This is a good process if you only need to clean up the valve seats a bit. If you buy new valves, the seats should be cut by a machine shop. So sorry I missed your JS decal order. I searched for it and sent you an invoice. Thank you!!

Lapping the valves will result in a concave/convex surface on the valve/head when the engine is at operating temperature. This is due to different thermal expansion of the valve/seat (the valve operates at a higher temperature). This will result in less sealing.

I thinked you lapped it too much, it should have a small 45 degrees on the face and seat, you almost remove the valve margin, a small amount of pitting is safer than a flat valve face, if it got pitting lap it then check for leaks, if it doesn't leak with the little pitting your ok, lapping is just to make sure it doesn't leak, when its grinded top much and loose the 2 angles its more likely it would leak because the air only got one smooth straight part to slip in not the the 2 angles it gotta try and pass to get in.
@timhoneycutt1367
@timhoneycutt1367 3 жыл бұрын
The angle will be the same as the seat so doesn't matter as long as it doesn't leak and the air flows
