How to lay new grass TURF - Turfing a lawn UK

having a freshly turfed lawn can really give the house a uplift and give an almost instant improvement, in this video i show you how i lay turf. laying turf is quite an easy job however the preparation for new turf is very important. to prepare for new turf we first rotavated the ground and racked it over to remove any lumps or large rocks, then we created an edge for the new turf to lay up against, we spread a layer of sandy loam on top to help the turf take and give it a good chance to grow well. then we laid the turf being careful to lay the rolls of turf tight together and watered well to help avoid shrinkage.
as you can see the turf has grown really well in just 1 week.

As a peisagistic engineer i need to say to you that watering the soil before planting the turf is equal with 0 in practice becouse any way you have to give the lawn 15 liter per square meter after planting,you didn t use sand before planting wich act like a glue between soil and grass,with the watering before you just maked your job harder,is really noice what you do but not inteligent

Funnily enough I was laying turf on a job last week. Was looking how others do it, you did it exactly like I would. Lead me down a rabbit hole of someone making an underground bunker, covered over and turfed! Good watch

I think its the standard way to lay turf. I jave seen turf laid on all sorts before and it seemed to be ok. But a nice bed of sandy loan for the turf to lay on seems to work best for me

Do you think using rotavater is 100% necessary? I only ask as I’m preparing the ground myself and getting quite deep into the soil so wondering if I can get away with it? 🤔

the rolls do you open the first roll one direction one way till the end and opposite direction in return and repeat the process until the end?

i like to try and do it all in the same direction and start the second row on a half roll so staggering the joints. (bit like bricks are laid). but as you see in the video i laid some in the opposite direction still with staggered joints just rolling the opposite way, and you can see it looks different initially after its laid, i think cos the grass is laying in the different direction from being rolled up, but after a week or so this was gone for me and it all looks the same.

What's shark sand ? I haven't heard of that. We used sandy loam on this one

If you have foxes in the area and you can't keep them out, don't waste your time laying a lawn, the moment you lay it, they will destroy it.

I'd use a rake and string lines to help see the dips and bumps, I have also used a strong straight bit of timber screwed to another like a giant rake and dragged that around to get a larger area about right.
