Thanks for this brilliant tutorial! I've been gilding for 20+ years, and you taught me some new things! Thank you for sharing your craft so clearly and thoughtfully. Much to the horror of my male coworkers, I refer to the removal of materials with masking tape as "bikini waxing."

First other gilder on KZbin that I haven't stopped watching because they don't know what they are doing. Nice explanation of your craft. Been gilding for 23 years, didn't know this technique. Going to have a play even though its not found on gilded frames. I'll never stop learning. Thank you for this video.

Those "half spins" were used extensively as a decorative element in the past. I have old pocket watches (circa 1890's) that incorporate half spins and they are gorgeous. On the next row of spins, the center is moved over half the diameter of the previous row.

Hi Jen... Always great detailed information that you deliver in an enjoyable manner.. My question is how often should I need to replace my 5000 trizacts? When I use a brand new one, my spins are crisp and reflective. However this seems to only last like 50 spins approx before they seem to go a little fuzzy. I am using 1shot size with immitation leaf and il wait approx 1 hour before putting leaf down Thanks very much and all the best. Mick.

Hi Jen, I just found your YT channel and I'm in love, your teaching ability and artwork is amazing. I'm just back into airbrushing about 2 yrs, and have flamed a couple rides in the distant past, wanting to up my game a little with Pinstriping and Leafing, But I have a couple questions, 1: Is there a special reason for tinting the Size ? 2: Are there recommended colors of tinting for different colors of leaf. 3: Is there a difference in durability, shine, material quality and work-ability between real leaf and imitation leaf ? 4: Do they make imitation leaf colors other than copper, gold, silver, bronze etc. like red, orange, yellow, blue, green etc. ? Again, Thank you for your time, teaching and making these awesome videos, you have a new follower.

Thanks for watching, Tinting size helps you see how much size you are laying down, and if you covered a area or not. 2 i tint with different colors depending on my background im working on but i usually mix white and imitation gold(not metallic) into my size unless im working on a pale background then ill use a blue. 3, there are quite a few differences between genuine vs real leaf i feel genuine is better all around and find it more workable for various applications. Imitation definitely has its place in the industry but i dont find it as versatile as genuine. 4 Imitation comes in your standard colors like gold,copper,silver and then variegated leaf. if you see a it in a full on red, blue color and has a label of "foil" attached to the description i would be extremely weary of using it theres been some imitation leaf on the internet with big companies that start with A and end with N that is not like regular imitation leaf

I noticed towards the end of your video you were able to basically wash off your leafing with mineral spirits. What do you do to seal your leafing so that it is permanent?
@goldenhippie6352

You can use the DUX sizing as a sealer or you can use any 2k clear coat.. depends on application needed

Hi, just came across your very informative videos and channel. Please can you tell me what grit size the Trizac pads are on your spinner, could they be something like 3000 grit. I designed a spinner that I had machined here in England UK but I don't think we have the Trizac brand here so I would have to find something similar to use on my spinner. I have subscribed to your channel, your work is excellent. I come from a custom airbrushing and signwriting background. This video is one of the best on this subject I have seen.

i have another leaf video that goes over supplies i use 3000 and 5000 grit. as long as you can get one of those grits that looks like a foam pad that can hook up to a da sander pad (like velcro) it should work for you

Watching the section where you're showing examples of pressing the leaf in... Have you ever sized, and then immediately removed the tape? Can you turn the leaf with the tape removed?
@HotRodJenPinstriping

Did you listen and see the part where I mentioned if you do that and use trizac for spinning to watch out for leaving swirls in the paint? You can get away with UT sometimes when working under a full clear coat but if not you need to protect the background from the sand paper

your samples in your video of your engine spinning look so sharp and detailed. I have been practicing and not even close. I am using water base size and waiting for Dux quick dry oil base size to come in. Will the size make a big difference? Should I stop and wait for the Dux? Does the brand of imitation gold leaf matter?
@HotRodJenPinstriping
@HotRodJenPinstriping 2 жыл бұрын
i personally wouldnt bother with water based size if that is not what you will be using in the long run. wait for the dux to come in, also the brand of imitation leaf i have not found to matter as much as the timing for the set up for the size and what you are engine turning with. all imitation leaf is heavier than genuine leaf so velvet will not do a good job turning it . trizact will
