Ive never learned a language in my sleep. However once i found a hard rock album i liked. I couldnt understand a word of the lyrics. But one night i had it on repeat during sleep. I had a dream abiut watching the band play. I could understand the lyrics clear as day. When i woke i remembered vividly. I listened & yep i could understand perfectly. I got ahold of lyric sheet after telling my friends what happened. They all said your full of it. When i got the lyric sheet i had friends look at it. All of them like me couldnt understand a word. When they read it i played album & sung instead of screamed the words. You could understand my words & they where a perfect match to lyrics. None of my friends belived thinking i had read lyrics in advanve & memorized them. But in reality i learned it in my sleep.

Actually Russia used to study about this topic alot :) Another Note: Maybe they didnt improve because they did listen while sleeping, but rather because they got more sleep (There are alot of studys that proof: Lack of sleep worsens your intellect) Cause =/= Correlation

I put tv on before my sleeps during my visits to japan and korea (the languages that am learning). It had no effect at the beginning, but slowly i became accustomised somewhat, and actually know what is on tv during my short-term consciousness, and can identify adverts straight away without looking at the tv.

Also, what textbooks do you recommend for Mandarin in addition to listening/reading/speaking? I'm talking about things like Integrated Chinese or New Practical Chinese Reader. Should someone starting out use them? Until what level? Thanks in advance!
@ariinbeijing7 жыл бұрын
Kristof Gazso Integrated Chinese is the best. The way I use textbooks is as useful sources for sentence mining (audio and written) and vocabulary, but they do need to be fact checked with a native speaker -- lots of vocab in Integrated Chinese is not super 地道 (authentic)

@CanaryMapping7 жыл бұрын
Its actually easy, native speakers can help you, grammar and vocabulary rules are only hard things, pronounciation is very easy compared to other romance languages and about vocabulary rules, they are mainly used in writing, speaking, only basic ones like the accentuation ones are used. (They are usually easy)
@zukio60887 жыл бұрын
¡Saludos!

So you essentially listened to the experimental group of words for longer than the control group. I'm not saying that sleep isn't important in learning, but this experiment only shows that listening to something for longer helps you remember more. You were likely awake for half an hour or so after you went to bed so listening during that time and in and out of REM sleep. Maybe woke up on a few occasions and possibly listened as you were waking up. So the experiment in my opinion is completely flawed and by no means a fair comparison. You should find some more words that you don't know, "study" each set for the same amount of time and listen to the recording in the control group while at work or doing housework/chores for a few hours and the experimental group while sleeping and then see what you are able to remember from each group. It still isn't a perfect test, but at least it would be a much better comparison in my opinion.
