Wish you’d show how you would do a language with a non Latin alphabet I use lingq for Belarusian and Bulgarian and want to start gujarat but I don’t know the alphabet
@kerim.peardon55513 жыл бұрын
One of the lessons he didn't choose was just on the alphabet. I would start there (or use online or book materials) to learn the letters and their sounds. Then, when you are ready to start reading, sound out words, then check your pronunciation/letter recognition. You can go through a story just doing that, then go back through it order to actually pay attention to the meanings of the words. I never got far beyong the letters, but I learned Hebrew letters by using a workbook and an online blog that made cartoons from the letters so it was easier to remember how to pronounce them. I can still sound out most words, even though I don't know what they mean.
@Thelinguist3 жыл бұрын
Obviously if the script is different you have to invest time in learning the writing system; But not to ace it, just to start to be able to read, or to struggle at reading, and you will gradually improve.

@michaelrespicio56833 жыл бұрын
As a native of a Southeast Asian language myself, I respect our neighbors including Indonesia as much as anyone else. When talking about the reasons why you would consider going back to Indonesian eventually, I couldn't help but notice you starting with the number of speakers and it sparks the question: why does it matter so much? It's becoming clear that it's a rather large deciding factor for you, Steve, when choosing a language and using that number to find more reasons to dive into the language and learn more about the culture. Not exactly fair. Why is it that some people try to learn languages that aren't as popular while you look at the number of speakers? You once said along the lines that you can discover reasons to dive into a language by doing research into the country and culture, so why not practice what you preach? There are actually more Vietnamese speakers but a language's worth is not and should not be measured by the number of speakers. Tagalog may not have as many speakers but Vietnamese and Filipinos are much easier to find around the world compared to Indonesians. Many Filipinos work abroad and although that may seem obvious, many of them are in nursing, making up about 25% of all nurses around the world and the number is only likely to increase. Because so many work abroad, many of us are adept at learning other languages. Get this, because so many Filipinos are actually based in the Middle East especially Saudi and the Emirates, many Arabs there speak Tagalog. Meaning if you somehow meet one of these people and speak Arabic, that's all good, but if they introduce you to their FIlipino friends, wouldn't you want to speak the language? And let's not forget that Filipino soldiers during the Korean War are the reason why South Korea exists today. Look it up. This is not to say don't learn Indonesian, but why not go for Tagalog as well considering how much the country and people have contributed and will continue to contribute? To anyone reading, I'll end off with this quick video. Question is: how much longer will YOU wait? kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKqXgJKdndprgK8

The problem with Tagalog is not many Filipinos don't speak it well.
