Marty and Chris, GREAT simplistic lesson for teaching the modes. I had a teacher who spent so much time and made it so complex I feel like I paid for a wing on his house. That was many years ago, Chris just did the same thing in about 10 minutes! Just one question, shouldn't the tonal center change for any given scale and not always end on the root?
@curiousguitarist2 жыл бұрын
Well, you can see modes that way, but you can also see them as stand alone scales with their own formulas. I think that method is way easier.
@ifensler2 жыл бұрын
@@curiousguitarist I like to think of modes like this...(anybody correct me if I'm wrong because I'm no expert) each mode has a number associated with it, for example Dorian=2, so since D is the 2nd note in the c major scale, D Dorian is the same as the c major scale. Aeolian=6, so since A is the 6th of c major, A aeolian = c major.

Wow! So strange to have a lightbulb moment. I’ve played self taught guitar by ear for many many years. Now to be fair I studied piano and theory in school and aced it …but never made the connection to the fret board. I think it was the form of the major scale using three notes per string in the first octave. I never played my scales in this straight forward way. How is this possible? I would play my 1st and 2nd on my E string starting at the 5th fret and then my 3rd ,4th and 5th on my A string and so on on my D string. I never counted my intervals or notes. I just played where it was comfortable. Suddenly all the theory i learned on piano in music school was crystal clear from just playing in this straight ahead form. Wow! What?? It’s just like the wow when I realized the relationship between theory and application the first time early on in my music education. It’s the same for math and sciences when you first learn by repetition or rote and one day the lights come on. Thanks Chris for surprising me on this wonderful day. Where is the lesson you taught on chord structure? I missed that and who knows maybe there’s another 💡 moment waiting for me there. All my best. Dave

Excelent. Thank you... . But I missed, 3 things..1.- doing all scales, starting on any key, in any place of the neck. ..I guess you have to learn 3 major scales patterns, multiplied by 3 ( no touching the 2nd; touching the 2nd, touching the second and first strings since the intervals between 3rd and second string is major 3rd instead of fourths).,. So all together 9 major scales patterns and then you can start in any key of the fretboard and apply the formula. 2.- I also missed a chart with all the most important scales formulas. 3.- How to connect scales all over the fret. Thank you again,
