Alan Bray is an interesting man and I'd say ahead of his time. I agree that listening in very important and the focus on grammar is misplaced and not the way to teach languages. Accepting even embracing mistakes is a big part of learning and I agree that the little boy learned more English by playing soccer than he ever did from a teacher twice a week (lol) . I disagree that English isn't complicated. It's very complicated because the the relationship between letters and sounds is weak. People who read English can't speak it and people who speak English can't read it for the same reason - spelling doesn't make sense. Saying English isn't complicated invalidates learners' experience of it and makes them feel they are at fault when they struggle to learn it.

Thank you for your kind words, Judy Thompson. I agree that the lack of phonics' regularity provides a big problem, especially when reading and writing, and perhaps didn't express myself very well. I certainly didn't want to give the impression that struggling students should feel any blame, though the way that some teachers approach their task compounds the difficulty.

Blame the student is part and parcel of authoritarian education. Somehow you managed to avoid that trap and educate on your own terms. Good on you!
