This FM synthesis tutorial series is designed for people who want to start a FM synthesis journey without complexity of the DX7 6 operator FM synthesis. I will show you how you can learn 4 operator FM synthesis using FM4. I will take you through sound design of the DX7 famous Bass 1 patch using FM4 with only 4 operators.
FM4 is an iPad FM synthesizer. FM4 can teach you how easy it is to make a great sound on a FM synth, using only 4 operators. Its interface is quite similar to analog synths, making transition from analog synths to FM synths easier and smoother.

Are you sure it was only in your lunch hour? FM is so complex yet it's so simple to work with.. Just with 2 Operators is fun.. I use my Montage to create 2, and 4 Operator sounds. Since it has 8 Operator I can split sounds evenly.. Great video.. Love that FM..

Thanks Synth Colors! I've never had a chance to play around with 4 operator FM synths, so this is my first attempt. FM4 is quite fun, quick sound design during lunch break!!!!

Yes, me either... a "variation" of the dx7 synthesis throughout 4 ops instead of 6, for different sounds ! ;-))

I thought this kind of tutorial could help analog synth users who want to learn FM synthesis, but too scared of touching the DX7 with 6 operator algorithms. The way FM4 is designed, it's a great way to get into FM synthesis from subtractive/ analog synths. Once people understand its advantages and disadvantages and learnt a bit about FM synthesis, they can then move over to the DX7 6 operator FM synthesis.

Exactly, you read my mind!!! I'm actually having a fun making some patches during my lunch break. They are actually getting more views than the DX7 tutorials, so I will concentrate more on making FM4 tutorials explained in analog synth terms. Once they are comfortable with FM4, then they can start using 6 operator FM synths. I definitely recommend trying FM4, if you are keen. You'll have a great time with quick sound design. Hey, what is your opinion on additive and wavetable synthesis? Wolfgang Palm released an additive app a couple of days ago called PPG Infinite. Is there anything FM can do that Additive can't?

Hi Jack, I've never owned or used additive or wavetable synths. I remember back in the 80s, Kawai had several additive synths. I also remember PPG Wave back in the early and mid 80's. The good thing about the DX7 is that you can create some additive or wavetable like sounds using its FM synthesis (and option of additive depending on algorithm you choose). If you look at algorithm from 23 to 32, they are more like additive, as you have an independent operator which can only generate a sine wave. I've actually made a lot of bell sounds that are sounds more like additive synths as well as PPG Wave-like synth. With simple sine waves, frequency modulation can quickly create complex waveforms. Additive synthesis requires many many oscillators to create complex harmonics. Each oscillator creates one harmonic. So it is less computationally efficient.

First Video that doesnt end in a bell or piano. I had once the hope that you once would come to the sounds of the 80s demo or at least some more exciting sounds. There are tons of bells and pianos out there so you might even have no need to modify these.
