How to: Lemon Burst on Quilted Maple Dye Tutorial

Creating a lemon burst finish on quilted maple doesn't have to be difficult! In this video, I demonstrate how to create a lemon burst using Angelus Leather Dye Gold and Angelus Leather Dye Yellow.

Make sure to use a wood conditioner or pre stain primer / sealer first before applying dye straight on the raw maple. I didn’t and it ruined my Les Paul kit.

I was thinking to do this to a veneer top but for a les paul. Will this adhere the same? Do I need sanding sealer afterwards or just multiple clear coat do? Thanks. I like the color.

It will work the same for a veneer top, though you need to be careful not to sand through the veneer. In my case, my guitar was a solid 1/4" piece of maple, so it could withstand some sanding. You don't have to use sanding sealer, but it's generally cheaper than lacquer and does help the color from getting pulled up into the clear coat.

@@zwitchguitars thanks. I was thinking to use boiled linseed and antique oil after. But in general, placing a veneer top will not change nor choke the tone?

@@ernestsureta5461 Are you adding a veneer top to an already existing finished guitar or adding a veneer to a raw body? I’ve never tried the former, but the latter is commonly done and I wouldn’t expect a tonal difference

@@zwitchguitars the latter. I removed the dull finish sanded it down to wood. I plan to remove the binding and place the veneer place back the binding. I always dream of having that lemon flame maple gibson LP. But when your budget is tight. You'll be creative LOL. Thanks for responding. I really appreciate this.

Can you provide the model number of the sander you are using

It's the Festool ES125/3. Felt like a lot of money at the time, but it was absolutely a game changer for me. Some of that could be the dust collection as well, but the sander itself isn't as loud as my 30 year old Black & Decker "sandstorm", it's more ergonomic, doesn't vibrate my whole body, etc.

@@camsprocket Wow, $280 is a killer deal. I didn’t do anything to the body other than sanding, I believe to 320 (don’t remember if I say in the video). Just dye right out of the bottle
