Excellent video! Very well explained! Definitely a go to to learn about Leslies. Leslie controls did sell off the locomotive horns but rumors have it they only make super typhoons for tugs and ships. The spike back chamber is called a resonance tube from Leslie. The tube allows the diaphragm to resonate at different frequencies from 255 hz to 550hz without major modifications to the head or diaphragm, I don’t believe that hole has to be over the tube but I do it anyway lol

@@TheHornKing recently learned that! 12 years in the hobby and never knew it before, if it wasn’t from that tube, leslies were going to be similar to M horns with different size chambers for each bell

I’ll have to do one of those. Iv got How to P horn and how to K horn vids out. Still need to do one on M horns but I may put out a How to Nathan vid as well covering the basics of all of Nathan’s horns.

The reason the first large bells were welded was because Leslie did not have the capability to cast them as one piece. The 25/255, 277, 31/311 bells were all two piece bells. The 247 bell was supposedly two pieces too but no 247 bells have ever been seen outside of advertising paperwork. There is also another type of three chime manifold. The flat top manifold was only used for S3L's in 1953. They were marketed for the S3E, but none of those horns have ever been found outside of advertising materials. And one more type of five chime manifold- the low profile SL4T manifold only used on that horn. With the RS chambers- there are actually three types. Pat. Applied for (1979ish), Patent number Parsippany, and Tampa heads. Aluminum and bronze tab caps had two rivets and one flathead screw from the factory. The bronze tab chambers were from 1951-1957. There were also aluminum tab chambers that used the same foundry pattern as the bronze tab chambers with threads. This was quickly changed to the far more common bolt and nut chambers. The threaded aluminum tab chambers only lasted through very early 1957. There are four main "generations" of 25 bell- 2 piece, square bells with a three digit number. 2 piece square with a two digit number, one piece close circle, and one piece far circle. The unmarked 55 bells came before the circle, and after the original rectangle. 55 bells that are produced today also have a rectangle, but it looks vastly different from a 1950's rectangle 55

Very cool video! I have 4 (2 RS- 44 & 2 RS-31) Leslie Supertyfons Parsippany N.J. I acquired them when I saved them from a trash dumpster at work when one of the units at our refinery was being demoed out. They are fully functional. I was going to disassemble them to powder coat them red again but, now I'm thinking I may just leave them as is. Exept for the name I didnt know much about them even looking them up on the internet. Your video (to me) was 5-Stars... I learned a lot about them. Definitely enjoyed the video

Hey! So I have an old Leslie horn. Single horn. I know it worked probably 10 years ago. Trying to get it going again. Won’t do anything but blow air through it. Any ideas of how to fix it? Thanks!

I picked up a prime pm920 the other day. Only downfall is it’s missing a diaphragm and a back cap and am having a heck of a time locating one.

Yea prime back caps can be tough to find. Hornblasters actually may have some of you reach out to them.

Iv only just found this Leslie information from the horn king. Iv owned a perfect condition RS3L for 15 years and cannot fit under my truck. Up until now I didn’t know about single manifolds. Can I obtain and convert from the one piece to 3 pieces? Keith in Scotland.

Great vid. I collected Leslies for a few years. Had them all. I got away from it but kept a few. My fav is a RJ Corman core S3L painted red but seems to have Conrail paint under. It’s a 69 Lyndhurst brass tag. No idea on its history. Bummer

Hi, i noticed that at 3:09 your leslie horn reads "tampa,FL" on all the back covers. The horn i have reads Tampa,fl on two of the bells and one reads Parsipanny, nj. Do you think whoever refurbished the horn simply put on the wrong back cover? Or did they come this way?

I need help lol Great video-good info I have a Leslie I think a RS-3L Low manifold Dome back, I need diaphrams for the back chambers, and I guess gaskets for between the horns, manifold, and chambers. I ordered diaphrams from hornblasters and they sent the diaphrams with the silicone seals, will these work, or do I need the two piece diaphrams All help is appreciated
@TheHornKing
@TheHornKing Жыл бұрын
You will need the 2 piece diaphragm set. The ones you got from HB are for RS heads and won’t work with yours. You can find those diaphragms on eBay along with the proper gaskets

Hi, greetings from Brazil! Can you explain why some Leslie horns like RS3L does a high pitch note like a whistle in the very begining of the sound? I love that sound and would like to undestand why it happens!
@TheHornKing
@TheHornKing 2 жыл бұрын
That sound your hearing is a common characteristic of leslies RS chambers. (Spiked back power chambers) They have a bit of a “bark” or “squill” to them when they first start to sound. Can’t really say why they do it. It’s just how they are designed that gives them that characteristic. The dome back S chambers and tabby chambers don’t have that sound.

Love the video great coverage on the Leslie horns..do you ever have a nice collection I’m a big fan of the RS3K and yours is just a beauty in that paint..also I never new about how careful you had to be with the diaphragms while opening them up unlike a Nathan Airchime! - I’m looking at a Leslie 5 chime around here for sale looks like it has all round numbers and it’s the spiked backcaps with Leslie ® what do you think it’s worth? Thanks in advanced!

Thanks I appreciate it! Iv got a lot more leslies that will be hitting the channel soon! Also as far as a RS5T as long as it works properly and is in good shape I’d say 1000-1400 is fare. $1400 being top. Personally I wouldn’t pay that much for one but if you are wanting one and can find it I’d say go for it. They are getting hard to find.

@@TheHornKing Yes hard to find indeed and not only that but only so many are willing to ship these heavy of horns across the border. Found a guy locally and it’s the first time finding one of these horns for sale in Canada. Thanks for your help!

How much air pressure does the rs 25 require
@TheHornKing
@TheHornKing 2 жыл бұрын
A Single RS25 will blow on as little as 40 psi. Personally when I run a single like that I run around 75-85psi.

Hey, I've got a question. I recently bought an a125-247 that was missing the pinch bolt. I can't really get it to sound. I've narrowed it down to that or the diaphragm. Any info would help.
@TheHornKing
@TheHornKing 2 жыл бұрын
I’d say it’s the diaphragm or not enough preload from the back cap. The horn will function properly without the pinch bolt. It’s just there to tighten down the back cap to prevent it from backing out and losing the Horns voice/ preload
