Ok, this video was groundbreaking for me. I'm not a teacher, but am wanting to move into a teaching space. I'm also teaching a specialized field for a specialized certification and kept getting stuck with "where do I start" and then overwhelming myself with how much there is to cover. I see alot of teachers using varying teacher resources. I rarely see teachers say here is the textbook we use and we will take the scope & sequence to lesson plan from. Out of curiosity - are schools still using textbooks that teachers utilize in the classroom? So much is online these days and it seems in my research, I have not come across one teacher talking about using textbooks for lesson planning, objectives, etc...

Great point! As a teacher, my first inclination is to plan based off of the required textbooks and to make sure any supplemental material enhances and aligns with the school's learning objectives. I agree that we don't see that from many teachers online, but it would be helpful.

How to curriculum map? The answer according to this video is that we look it up on our district site. What if your district doesn’t have it? Or what if you are in a charter school or private school and can’t access a greater districts website?

When a district-provided curriculum map isn't available, or if you are in a charter or private school that cannot access resources from a larger district, you can still create a curriculum map by following these steps: 1. Identify Standards National or State Standards: Begin by reviewing the relevant national or state standards for your subject area and grade level. These standards will guide what students need to know and be able to do by the end of the course. School-Specific Goals: If your school has specific educational goals or outcomes, include those as well. 2. Determine Scope and Sequence Scope: Decide on the breadth and depth of content to be covered. This involves selecting the key concepts, skills, and knowledge that students should learn. Sequence: Organize these elements in a logical order, determining when each will be taught during the school year. Consider the progression of skills and concepts from simple to complex. 3. Break Down Units Unit Planning: Divide the school year into units based on the scope and sequence. Each unit should have a specific focus and cover a set of related standards. Time Allocation: Estimate how much time you will spend on each unit. This helps in pacing your instruction. 4. Design Assessments Formative Assessments: Plan ongoing assessments that allow you to monitor student progress throughout each unit. Summative Assessments: Create or identify assessments that will measure student mastery of the standards at the end of each unit or term. Standards are curriculum? Progression of learning?

Good question. Standards are the learning benchmarks set by the state. They are organized by grade level and content area. The curriculum is what you do to teach to those standards. For example, the standard: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking is for 3rd grade ELA. The activities, books, exercises, etc is the curriculum. Yes the standards progress in complexity as the year goes on and as the student progresses through the grades. I will do a longer video on this soon. This is a great question. Thank you for taking the time to ask it.

That's ok. You can map it out yourself. Just take the standards for the year an d divide them into 4 quarters. If you have a textbook, use that as a guide.

Yes!!! We recommend following the standards as a home school mom/teacher because then your students are on the same track as the district. Of course you have more freedom as a homeschool teacher. But following the standards is a great practice :)
