I use a mix of fine rye grass seed and 70% sand with 30% soil to overseed and level my lawn. The lawn is approx 80 sq meters and this topdressing job was completed over two days but can be done in one day to get a perfect level lawn.

Nice attempt, but...if you want a golf course level lawn do what golf courses do. Use a 1mm or 2mm screened course sand and use quite a bit more than this guy. I've leveled many dozens of lawns, some using up to 20 tons of sand. Using a leveling product with anything but sand is counter productive. The organic matter will break down and you'll have an uneven lawn again. After you level it, use a shop broom to work the sand down. Put down a good fertilizer to force the grass to grow threw the sand. Unfortunately you really need to pick leveling or over seeding.

@GardenLawncareGuy
@GardenLawncareGuy 3 жыл бұрын
If you are building up larger levels topsoil can be best to establish a level in the first place it can also be easier to grow seed in if you can't stay ontop of your Watering. If the garden is already mostly level the 70/30 is alot easier to spread and level fine spots out, more attention needed for Watering if you are overseeding too

Hi, enjoying this series of videos. Just wondering what sort of area lawn you’re working on with 1.5T of top dressing? Trying to figure out what I need for my lawn that’s 40m2.
@GardenLawncareGuy
@GardenLawncareGuy 3 жыл бұрын
It's around 80sqm Ben. 1T will be a great start also depends on how level it already is

@@GardenLawncareGuy Thanks for the reply. It’s not very level ATM, got a few dips to level out. Will try 1T to take out as much as I can and do the same next year. Also need to get treatment down for leather jackets. Intending to apply that as I’m watering during the week or two after renovation. Is this a good/bad idea? My thinking is the treatment will work as the seeds are germinating and trying to combine the watering required for both.

I`ve just overseeded my lawn this week. I cut and scarified it and overseed with compost/seedmixed. Is it good practice to add sand to your lawn, what does the sand do and what sand is best used?
@GardenLawncareGuy

It's a turf dressing I used for levelling, a 70/30 dressing is easy to move around to get levels

Do you recommend using fertiliser straight after seeding I have a1 lawn pre seeder and it suggests using it once the first signs of germination have shown ? Cheers

Follow the reccomendation on the pack, it can be better to apply later on when the seeds can actually use it. I just did not have time to come back in a week's time

Awesome! I'd like to get something close to this done this year but may run out of time. I have a couple of questions. How do you ensure the sand won't blunt your mower blades in the future and, do you have any tips for killing sprouting bulbs like bluebells and crocus that are coming up under a new lawn?
@GardenLawncareGuy
@GardenLawncareGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Some people use other mowers for the first few cuts until things are settled, damp the lawn surface too for example before cutting. For bulbs only thing I know is dig out or non selective paint on the leaves or use the gell thing you can dab on

You can hire one from a local hire shop for not too expensive, consider getting a pro around for that specific job using the machine or the only manual one I've used that really worked for me is the swardman aerator - video and link in description for that here. I've got another one in test at the moment but want to check it works before reccomending. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXfHeGacntioiac
