Yep agree with the title, I’ve been advocating this for decades of teaching students. Some people do not have always the time enough for shedding: 9 to 5 job to pay the bills, family with kids, wife… I always told them they were going nowhere shedding for 2 hours on sundays only, 15 minutes but 15 minutes EVERYDAY is the best way to train our brain. Your 15 minutes plan is easy and fun, warm up, learn a new concept, then play it with a beat or backingtrack with chords. Perfect way to get entertained !

This is the most spot on and succinct advice on practicing I've heard in 54 years of playing guitar and other strings. Thank you! Back in the day musicians referred to practice as "woodshedding" cuz you'd take your axe out to the wood shed and nobody in the house could hear you.

This came at such a good time. I play guitar more than bass, but this is still applicable. Play something more difficult than what you're used to. Get outside your comfort zone and learn to fail. It's all good. I am trying to learn Polyphia's ABC and the guitar part is tough for sure. But it's also forcing me to learn different techniques. Keep practicing!

I agree with this advice for intermediate players and beyond. Beginner players will need to have some real guidance for how to use that fifteen minutes efficiently, though. Granted, fifteen minutes a day for a beginner will still get them further than trying to jam in time they don't have. Consistency is key and fifteen minutes is a lot easier to get that consistency up.

I’m a beginner and I agree. I started learning the bass about 2-3 months ago and I’m really enjoying the progress I’ve made so far but I wouldn’t have gotten it with only a daily 15 mins. I practice at least an hour 5 days a week and usually end up doing over 2 hours. I was lucky to have the guidance of a musician friend for my first day where I was able to get correct posture and finger picking advice. Breaking that beginner to intermediate wall in any craft takes hours and I feel like a beginner like me could get frustrated by the lack of progress because of those very short first sessions. If you got more than 15 minutes, practice practice, practice.

I Believe the basic concept of improvement are universally applicable, and lucky for us exercise science is really clear with what that is. Volume. Meaning, Frequency (How much you do), and intensity (How hard it is). So yes this is great! Ideally you would be able to do this for longer, but life do be like that sometimes.

Great ideas and advice. However, I would say if you are going to practice something that is difficult to play physically, a much longer warm-up should be done to avoid hand/finger stress. It probably takes 15 minutes of casual playing/exercises to warm up. If you are going to practice something that is difficult mentally, then 1-2 minutes of warm-up is fine.

Hello Travis. Noob bass player here. I use Nate Smith's "Pocket Change" , a solo drum album, to apply techniques in a musical context. All of the tracks are pure fire and he gives you the basic grooves and then starts syncopating and throwing curve balls that helps me internalize the tempo. Check it out!
@spacedaddy5517 Жыл бұрын
I mostly just play along with songs, to be honest. I think any type of playing is going to make people improve, even if it's just playing the same things over and over. This is just because, we can be almost like drummers with percussion and not even playing a lot of different chords or notes, if it fits the music you play and like. The way you play any notes, that's going to change by the time you're middle aged. But there's always hard stuff to learn, like soloing, walking bass lines, percussion, I should probably practice more Jazz, if I was trying to improve the fastest way possible.

Travis, I need your help!! I learn best by watching someone play and do as they do. With that being said, there’s just not many videos of James Wilson covers, or Brittany Scott, or Draylin Young. Do you think you could do videos of covers to their songs. Lol I think I’m stressing out MD out

I recommend a book called " The Tao of Jazz improvisation" by Sheldon Zanboer. Improved my playing tenfold ( am not even halfway through the book. just do the first 126 exercises and it will become apparent what you need to practice) . No theory, no technique, just exercises to connect your ear with your hands in real time.

In a world that accepts & caters to western countries running a lot of employees 24/7 , 12 months out of every year has seen everyone not having enough time & its down to us as individuals to find some time thats purely there's & it could be a case of having no time , unless we prioritize our own lives... I'll watch this at a more convient time as its way too early in the morning as it is now , to stick with your upload... Your upload showed up on my KZbin Channel & im intrigued at the concept of Less is More , which is basically what the headline of your upload has described & it'll be interesting to see how this & the description pans out!.. Until then " All The Best " .....

Learn technique before you attempt to learn anything else and then learn scales and modes. If you put that time in now it will save you from learning bad habits that will take you to what I am saying years from now. I wish someone emphasized the importance of this to me years ago.
