I'm 81 years old and can still build a pole barn single handedly by using gin poles. I lifted a 34 foot long ridge beam to the top of 16 foot support poles. Then I welded together a little 4 pulley differential gin pole that I slide along the ridge beam and use it to lift 34 foot roof trusses built from rough cut pine lumber. More fun than any nursing home I've seen.

Thanks for the video. I spent all morning trying to life a heavy palm trunk that I go into a trash bin, laying on the ground. It failed. I am now going to try what I learned from your video.

I've got to build a pole barn all by myself from fallen trees after a hurricane. I've got a big steel chain block and tackle, and a gas powered two person hole digger. No front end loader or backhoe, so it's back to ancient times for me and mechanical leverage and advantage. I wish you had demonstrated this in real life with a real telephone pole or tree trunk.

The best learning is by watching or observing. I'm sure you've got a very good idea on how to do it. Since it's only a verbal explanation nothing much we could learn from.

old ways are best - less to go wrong - just takes a bit longer. Just think what it costs to get a crane on site.

It would have helped if you had had a demonstration.

Yeah, I’m sorry. I was pretty new at making videos then… not that I’m much better now.

@@OffGridFromTheGroundUp fortunately there was a demo video straight after yours, unfortunately I am still none the wiser!!!

@@CTID I'm here for you! Don't worry. So, I'll try and explain before I share the link to my other video. Let's say you need to lift a log, beam, or anything 10' into the air. We need to build a GinPole or A Frame tall enough to do that. So, let's make our GinPole 14-16' tall. That will give us a enough room for our piece of wood to clear 10' and give our chain hoist enough room to work. (I like to use a chain hoist, they're cheap, and they have a lock on them so that the wood can't come crashing down on you) Next, if you're working from the ground, you need to get your GinPole into the air, it's easy with 2 people, but doable with 1 person. When youre GInpole is in the air, it should have a slight lean forward, not much, just a little. Next, get some ratchet straps (attach one that will go forward, and another than will go backward), the longer the better, and strap them from an immovable object (Maybe a tree) to the top of the GinPole. Now, you start raising the GinPole manually by lifting it. If you're on the ground, it may help to slam a couple of stakes in the ground so that the bottom of the GInPole won't slide as you're starting to manually raise it. Once you get the GinPole into the right position, you run the front ratchet strap to another tree or immovable objeft, and tighten it up...Now the GinPole is tight at the front, and back, and can't go anywhere....You're ready to lift! Here's a video I made when working on the 2nd floor....You'll notice in this video, that I'm not using a front strap, because I didn't have anything to strap to...a little sketchy, but still worked! Hope this helps...Ask away! I'm happy to help. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ombWe6SBpLGsn80
