How to Light and Keep Your Bee Hive Smoker Lit

A beekeeper’s smoker is a smoldering can of dry fuel, with bellows and a spout. By directing short puffs of smoke at them, we get bees to move off parts of the hive we need to access. Moving a crowd of hard-working bees off the box edge so they aren't crushed as the next box is placed is one such use of the smoker. Anne I was told not to use cedar chips. Is that correct ?

Hi Elwood! Cedar chips make a lovely smell and I've never heard any reason not to use them as smoker fuel. What have you folks heard?

I've heard cedar chips are toxic.
