In NYC, you learn to love 99 cent stores (and they're everywhere! lol), Family Dollar Stores and Target! You get everything you need from there. And for food, smaller local supermarkets and ethnic produce shops, will get you the best variety and prices; ethnic neighborhoods like Chinatown and Washington Heights will have great options. Washing laundry by hand is a little bit extreme! What about washing jeans? It's just not worth the trouble, it's only like 2 or 3 buck to use a machine in the laundry mat and then you can hang your cloths to dry if you want to save another $1.25 lol
@WhatashameMaryJane5 жыл бұрын
I don't hand wash my clothes just to save those few bucks. It's more about the fact that if you are alone it's not worth the investment of energy. Even if I had to wash my entire set of clothes, I wouldn't even fill up half of the machine. I save time by hand washing my stuff and I discovered that it's a very relaxing thing to do, kind of meditation. To prove you that, my boyfriend - who is a very busy entrepreneur and barely finds the time to bring his dirty laundry to the laundry shop at the corner of the block and go take his clean stuff back - has started to hand wash his clothes from time to time, just because it's a pleasant and relaxing activity. I was shocked. I hand wash jeans as well, not a big deal at all - I don't need to wash them more than once every 10 days since I spend so much time at home working. Bed sheets I don't though.

Everyone knows this but I thought I'd add, to save a tiny bit here and there, when you go to a cafe, take a few extra napkins and sugar packets for use at home. It adds up. Same for other kinds of condiments, whatever you use at home. Also, and this saves you way more but for some might be a bit much, walk around your neighborhood on the night before recycling day. People put out all sorts of items that are still in good shape but which they just don't want anymore, dishes, cookware, furniture, TVs, electronics, books, vacuums, etc. If you can get past the ick factor, it can save you a lot of money. I've done this myself a handful of times when times were tough--and even when not, because people throw out some really nice things! As for food, that's not complicated. Buy good, healthy food in bulk, and cook meals at home. Good deals on basics can still be found even in NYC, if you shop around, fruits, vegetables, pasta, bread, spices, cheese, etc. Just avoid high priced places like Whole Foods or Gristede's or anything that comes in small pre-packed packaging (which is also bad for the environment). If it's pre-cut, it's expensive.

Mary Jane, you are awesome and exceptional in saving. I'm much older than you, when I was living in San Francisco in the early '80, my roommate and I bought all the necessary kitchen stuff at the Salvation Army and Garage Sales. When was time to go back to Italy I resold almost everything with my own garage sale (very common in San Francisco at the time.) You remind me a bit of my daughter, same eye color and similar ability to survive with the bare essential. A couple of years ago she won a round-trip air ticket to the US. She landed in Denver to go to Aspen to take part in a freestyle ski movie. She injured her knee the first day, spent the programmed week in Aspen watching the friends skiing, and then, with two friends bought a van to drive to San Diego. She drove all the highway 1 to San Francisco, and then to Oregon visiting her technical sponsors (wise move for an athlete living on skiing). In the end, they sold the van for the same price they purchased it, and all the trips costing only $ 600 per person. Not bad at all.

Hi Mary Jane about the laundry in the future, I advise you to use (Sea to Summit Lite Line Clothesline) or something smaller but this one use it a lot when I travel I can hang my clothes so conveniently in the balcony or any place and when I hang my clothes outside with the clothesline or the (clothes Rope) I Turn the clothes over (the outside turn to the inside )so the Sun rays hit inside which : 1- will Sterilize the clothes with the sun rays 2- and the outside Exterior color not damage from the strong sun rays. 3- quick dray the Clothesline very very small will not take space in your backpack it's very handy and it has its own clothes holder. copy ( Sea to Summit Lite Line Clothesline ) and google it . about the bucket I use travel bucket 10L ( Portable Outdoor Wash Basin Folding Bucket for Travel ) it's so small and so light
@WhatashameMaryJane5 жыл бұрын
I checked out the clothesline, it looks very practical I must say. I've bought a clothesline in the past but it was a much simpler design, too simple, so I ended up using it...never. The problem about clotheslines is that in many apartments it's very hard to hang them up. Great tip to leverage the sterilizing power of the sun: it shows you are from a very hot country! I had never seen the portable bucket (I guess this is the lack of camping experiences in my life): it's genious! I might thing about getting one. Thanks for the hack!

Hello Mary Jane, Your video answers many questions as to what NY is like, so thank you. Now, you can use a cheap plastic bag to wash your clothes in. A Zip lock bag works well as you can shake it and let it sit in your sink and soak. Airing your nickers (undies) is quite amusing.
