How to load a mini excavator on a tilt deck trailer

You did a nice clean job with good chains and binders, but it is not correct. You should have the machine tied down at 4 separate points, plus boom and implements. The way you have it, if you have one failure of chain or binder, the entire machine is loose.

While it is certainly "better" / "safer" to tie the machine at 4 separate points, it is not required for equipment under 10k lbs, the chains and binders still need to be rated correctly for the machines weight, but front and rear is legal (so it is not "not correct") for this machine. The boom and implements still need to be tied down as well, but their method for that is legal as well (assuming the straps are in good condition, etc.). Not arguing the failure scenario you mentioned, just that it is legal the way they did it and not unusual.... All that said, I tie my CAT 302CR (5k lbs) down with 4 binders and 4 short chains in my dump trailer (or the equipment trailer), one on each corner, as that machine was not cheap..... And yes, the arm gets strapped down as well, plus any buckets.

@@stephenlehr6020 I was not aware of the 10k cutoff for that. I have an 8k machine and I used to do exactly what they did until I was told about the "4 separate points" and it made good sense so I've always done it that way since. They definitely did a thorough job with the right stuff and I'm not faulting them at all.

@@stephenlehr6020 at what point do you need to go to chains versus industrial straps? I have seen all types of straps including 5,000 and 10,000 lb working loads. With that said if you strap down the machine with six heavy duty straps would that be legal? Don't get me wrong I'm not asking if it's better I understand chains don't rip as easy or break as easy I'm just trying to figure out in a pinch can you use straps if your equipment is under 10,000 lbs? Please be detailed in your response if you can thank you 🙂

you got a cdl? also just fyi...each quarter of the machine needs to a separate contact point...so you need to cut them chains in 1/2 and give each corner its own safety point. at least it should be....is for us

In our area it’s not 26lbs or less, that’s what I thought at first. Some areas of your have a 10,000 lb or more trailer & are commercial you need a DOT card at least.

So much wrong about what you are trying to teach. All I can say, Is at least you are trying. And you don't have a 5-point tiedown. A 5-point tie down is 5 separate chains and straps. The one on the rear is a one-point tie down. The front needs a binder on each side, not one binder. That's also considered a single tie down. The machine has to have 4 points, the blade has to have one, the bucket on the rear has to has one. And drop your chains through the stake pockets and put the chain hook on the upside. That way if the binder breaks the chain doesn't come off.

I thought the same thing but this machine weighs about 8500lbs, so this is technically legal, both in terms of number of tie down points, and working load limits (assuming g70 chains). I agree though, it's confusing when he calls out the 5 points, because this is not a 5-point tiedown, and the 5-point tiedown isn't required for the situation. I hope this doesn't confuse anyone into thinking they can run all heavy equipment like this. In any case, I'm with you on how to secure these things - at our company if it rolls, it gets 4 direct points + 1 if there's a bucket, regardless of weight or what DOT says about a 10klb threshhold.
