My biggest complaint about the "silver timeline" was that they refused to actually adhere to the principal of that implication. 1. what is the "flashpoint" event that makes this timeline different from the original? 2. how does this event alter the timeline in the long run? 3. (the story occurs here) how does the change affect the characters/events that are different in this timeline? They never fully committed to even the concept of "alternate timeline" because as you stated the timeline of the original becomes even more important. because now any and all changes require some level of explanation as to how and why they are different. The end result of the series ends up being playing in the sandbox with no understanding of how and why things existed, why things happened, and how characters grew and evolved over time. My 2 big examples are: 1. Madrigal - in the original timeline this planet fell to the covenant in 2525. but in the silver timeline this planet which was a very outer colony, is only just discovered in 2552. and is still un-glassed after Reach has been destroyed? how? why? the covenant should have destroyed this world decades prior. 2. the UNSC Condor. Not even developed until around 2554 or 2555. and having only "limited" slipspace capacity due to the major advancements in Miniaturization due to Forrunner technology savaging and reverse-enginering. so again why does this ship even exist at this point? And that doesn't even begin to approach the issue you brought up at the end of the video. using an IP without respecting everything and everyone that the IP represents.

Personally I think if he went that route he'd only end up digging himself a deeper grave because the truth would become apparent sooner or later. Really three shouldn't be a need for the actor to be an advocate for the show material. If they're a fan, that's great! If not, great! If they're the ONLY source material advocate, though, then it's a backwards situation. Cavill seized the opportunity to leverage his position and advocate for how the show really should have been - he did what he could, but could only do so much. He went aboooooove and beyond. Pablo would have fared better among fans to be more aware of his character's actual history etc but he doesn't necessarily need to be a fan or well educated in the lore to get it right AS LONG AS the show runner/etc can steer him in THAT direction. Cavill was a tire on a car with a bad steering wheel. He wobbled the car in an attempt to course correct, but Pablo is fine to just let the wheel steer him because that's frankly his job. The show Andor is an interesting example of this. It's brilliant - next to Rogue One it is probably the best executed & produced Start Wars content yet. Tony Gilroy? Not a fan. Much/most of the cast? Not necessarily fans. Mostly theater figures. Yet they pulled off the most accurate, most gifting content yet because they weren't concerned about hijacking the IP to deliver "their own vision" of it. They simply set out to make quality content they way they knew how, and in the process advocates for the source material kept them informed of what matters and they LISTENED. In a sea of wacky, wayward star wars content Andor stands alone as something truly mature and brilliant. Yet initial viewership suffered because of poor publicity and the fact that there aren't lightsabers in every episode (hyperbole, but still the point). I don't expect Disney to learn from it, but I really HOPE they do. They don't necessarily need the show runner or actors to be fans in order to make quality content - as long as they LISTEN to fans and account for that

@@samreddig8819 I've always been that weird guy who defended Halo 4 and I agree yeah Halo 4 was good change of pace and deserves credit for trying to flesh out and wrap up the logical end point of Chief and Cortana's story which had been the focal point of an entire trilogy of games beforehand, with the Arbiter's story arc and the splintering of the Covenant serving as a neat side show during Halo 2. Halo 4 is good, if you frame it as the conclusion to an old trilogy, not the start of a new one, and I think that was the fundamental flaw in 343's Halo where they though Halo 4 could serve as an origin story for Chief the Marvel Superhero, not Chief the Spartan trained for war from the age of 6 onwards. It's actually kinda tragic in a way when you factor in what could have been. If you were going to make more Halo games beyond Halo 4 that did try and marvelise and flesh out the world, which would have had potential is if you focussed on smaller scale stories fleshing out minor characters, or even try and incorporate the book lore, like for instance Admiral Cole's first real naval engagement with the Covenant and the early stages of the Battle for Harvest, cause there's like 5 years worth of stuff that just isn't going to get fleshed out now, you could even have a few missions as Johnson, or maybe do something really weird and zany where you play as the Arbiter for the whole game, or maybe a Forerunner centric game where you fight against the Flood while the Halo's are being built. If you absolutely must have the Chief be the main character in a new Halo game again, I rememeber following Halo 4's release and a continuation of the story without Cortana, my Halo 5 would have been like an ONI black ops operation where ONI or the UNSC deep state pulls some skullduggery to replace the Arbiter so as the Elites can be more readily subjugated by humanity, and you still could have had the 343 trope of the UNSC being the bad guys but at least it would have made sense. And Halo 5 as it is displays elements of this but it was derailed by the need to bring back Cortana and the stupid Warden Eternal.

Pablo Schreiber saying Chief is just a blank slate, and we never get to see his feelings or emotions, is ironic considering the significant effort put into making Master Chief more human by 343 over the past decade, not to mention the fact that novels have been doing this for over 20 years. He just reads it off like he was offered a bio about Chief from the pre-alpha Halo CE development team. He seems convinced that he’s just interpreting the character ‘because there is no character or character arc,’ according to him. Yeah, forget Halo 4 ever existed (which was made by 343i BTW) 🤦♂️.

I think something else to keep in mind is just how much execution matters. I hope Mr. Jellyfish will forgive me for saying this but I think that even if Halo and The Witchmen had made those changes that they did, changes in focus and such, but did them well, you'd see much less hate for them. Sure fans would likely be unhappy with it, but if they were actually good on their own merits you'd have lots more people who would be willing to stand up for them. Halo was fucked because even standing on its own, seen by someone with no experience with Halo at all, it's just plain bad television. It's not just bad Halo, it's bad sci fi. Whereas if it had been a big deviation from the core canon _but was good at being what it was_ you'd have plenty of folks who'd enjoy and defend it because they don't have an existing attachment to the original works, and can enjoy it without any expectations.

Both the gravemind and 343 Guilty Spark confirmed this. Any game after 3 should have been about that human /Forerunner connection as 343i acknowledged with 4, but they missed the part there it was a human connection. The Forerunners were humans. When it comes to adaptions, its important to not lose sight of what made the IP so beloved in the first place. While at the same time presenting it in a way to lure in new fans. This comes with taking what maybe didn't work so well in the source material or what may not look so good in a different medium. All too often it feels like people fall into the trap of brushing off almost everything about a franchise expect the basics of characters and their names. And even then you're not always so lucky. Look at the X Men movies, the first one had a joke about Wolverine's yellow costume from the comics, because everyone knows Black is cooler, only for 24 years later to have Wolverine actually wear his yellow and blue costume and on reveal Deadpool almost literally yells "FINALLY!" instead of a joke about how ridiculous it looks. Really, a Space Marine who fights aliens to ensure humanity's survival or a Monster Hunter with magically enhanced abilities in a post Game of Thrones world shouldn't be such hard concepts to make work. And while the Witcher has lasted time will tell if that's due to Cavill or not. To dismiss the source material when making an adaption is a mistake. You're shooting yourself in the foot the moment you decide the source material isn't important. When fans should be the ones to help rally and get the word out. Sure some fans are impossible to please but it saids something that Michael Bay managed to win fans over, if only for a while, just by having Peter Cullen reprise Optimus Prime in the Transformer movies. Its important to extend the Olive branch to fans, sure sometimes an adaption that changes things can work. But like, its not a coincidence most adaptions fail in part due to being unfaithful to the source. I mean, would we have gotten a third Sonic movie if they'd stuck with the original design? And its funny I wrote some of these points while watching and then you went and made them anyway. Great vid like always WJ.

Good video, but I'd have to disagree with the premise. Henry Cavill is the unicorn of entertainer-audience relations (at least by current year America standards), and also had the benefit of being a household name by the time The Witcher came around. Pablo Schreiber, who is far more easily discarded and replaced, seems like he just tried to put the best spin on a bad strategy that was largely out of his hands. He was definitely no Amandla Stenberg or Rachel Zegler, actors who did real harm to their respective projects with their media approaches, and personally I can't fault him as a career actor for wanting his face visible more often. Ultimately, I really don't think blaming Schreiber for his show's failure is valid or accomplishes anything. Halo was ruined so thoroughly by Paramount and its showrunners that nothing Schreiber could have said or done would have saved it.

And it's arguably even more messed up given that women at least aren't expected to not drink water (which humans need in order to not die) for days. Giving Ciri and Yennefer more of a spotlight is actually the only idea Lauren had that was good. Don't get me wrong Ciri gets a lot of pages in the novels but Yennefer is CRIMINALLY underused by Sapkowski. She's easily my favourite character so initially I loved what I was hearing. But then 99% of Yennefer's story deviates from what little we did know, oversimplifying many of the biggest aspects of the lore in how magic works and the political landscape of the continent, or just throwing the established lore out entirely and replacing it with straight up fanfiction that felt like it was written by a moronic child. And despite giving Ciri more of a spotlight in the time before Geralt takes her to Kaer Morhen, literally THE MOST IMPORTANT STORY from that time period is cut. For non book readers, after Geralt and Ciri were bound through the Law of Surprise (prior to Ciri's birth) they actually meet years before she's forced to flee from Cintra by the Nilfgaardian invasion. They run into each other by chance, and for most of the story, neither actually knows who the other is. She doesn't know this is the Witcher she's promised to and he just thinks she's some random nobleman's daughter who's going to get herself killed if he doesn't get her out of Brokilon Forest (no, the Brokilon Forest episodes in the show do not have anything to do with this), so figures he can take a detour from whatever the hell he was supposed to be doing for a couple of days anyway. And because neither knows they're bound by destiny, they actually become friends completely organically. As they travel they hang out and banter, and Geralt's effectively become her cool uncle by the time they realise who the other is. It's the foundation for their ENTIRE relationship. But that went over Lauren's head apparently. And for something so obvious to escape her notice, it's obvious Daredevil's success had little to nothing to do with her. In short, giving Yennefer and Ciri more of a spotlight was a great idea that was terribly executed, to the point where it would've been better if they'd just cut most of that to focus on Geralt.

The problem with modern hollywood is that they cant work with an established canon, and with a story that is factually better then anything they could deliver In their dellusion they believe they can do better, and we end up with the halo clusterfuck and the witcher disaster ballsack armor and all The bottom line is that as long as these muppets are incapable of realizing their job in an adaptation is not to tell "their own story" but to shut the hell up and stick to the story tjat is established, every adaptation made by hollywood will horribly fail

There is good polish movie by oscar winner Andrzej Wajda titled "Man of Marble" (funny, man of steel hehe). I Think its nice allegory of Henrys relations with rest of crew working on the show. Doing something so entusiasticly is not always positive thing. I think it ruined a posiblle chemistry between characters depicted on show. This show really ruinng potencial those books have as a unique interesting fantasy world, but many factors contribute towards that, inculding Henrys over enthusiasm i think. Overall pity, especially for us, here in Poland.

I think a big part of halo failure was that 343 wasn't that involved in the show since they where trying to make halo infinite. And big part on why The last of us and Fallout are good is because Bethesda and Naughty Dog where worked closely with the show runners and having them respect the ip. On the other hand its 343 so maybe it was a good thing they didn't help with it but sometimes the interns that work there come up with something decent or even good like Chief characterization in Infinite. I recognize that Suicide Run music, you can't fool me, thats not halo or witcher music. Master chief is not a blank slate and the guy himself says as much when he then describes a bunch of qualities the character has. The reason Cavill is nerd jesus is because he likes the stuff and seems to genuinely give a shit. He is always talking about what the thing means rather than everyone else, who constantly talks about what needs to change or how they're changing it to suit them. Part of what made halo so disappointing is there had already been things here and there that were done nearly perfectly, but were just short. I've mostly only played the games, but i read a couple of the books, which were surprisingly good. The idea chief is blank is insane. One of the better parts of the first book i read was reading about the spartan training as kids, sneaking onto military bases using reflections to fool checks under cars and stuff, the insane level of crap they went through to forge them into what they became. Pablo himself wanted the helmet off. But it is hard to say how much was his desire and how much was bad writing. Seeing people take off their helmets in active combat zones is insanely annoying. We learned this was a bad idea back in Starship Troopers of all things! I also maintain that they could have just had the main character be Johnson, leading up to the events of the first game. They would get their diversity, nothing would be ruined and it would serve as a good test before they go for a second season. Hell, it would probably be cheaper too, since Johnson is still a (semi)regular dude. Theres gotta be some 40 year old black dudes with gravelly voices who can act. In the complete reverse, if Cavill hadn't been cast as Geralt, likely the Witcher show would have been dead after one season. Especially with how bitchy they were about him after he left.

I see you too are a creature of culture. I agree with your points - and the Fall of Reach novel is awesome. My personal favorite novel is Contact Harvest, which tells the story of first contact with the Covenant, and funnily enough SGT Johnson is the principle character. It could make a great limited series or movie if adapted by the right people.
@weareharbinger9144 ай бұрын
@@workingjellyfish I didn't read that one, maybe I should. I think Johnson is the best character for a show because he is charismatic, respected and has some great one liners in addition to being a fan favourite character that we know little about. There is so much you could expand upon there. Instead we get braindead writers who don't care about anything and a prop department that did a pretty good job that was wasted

Someone with a big peerage name being really popular in an almost exclusively nepotistic film industry leaves some doubt to it all.
