Nice job 👍🏼. Putting one together right now. You have the same exact idea I did. Beam I'm putting in is a 180 year old and he would beam going to put a matte finish on it using Vermont natural coating finish.

Wouldnt it of been better to put the screws underneath, so you dont have 2 holes on the surface
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 3 жыл бұрын
This mantle is actually fairly high on the wall. most of the time you see the underside more than you'll see the top side. also with all the decorations that will go on top you'll never see it. But the most important reason and the reason I put it on top is it is far stronger to put up there. This mantle is around 100 lb and wants to rotate forward off of the posts. Putting screws on top will stop that forward rotation. Putting screws in the bottom wouldn't help with that.

I'm seeing a lot of rustic mantels going up with a lot of unneeded processing where they're taking a lot of the rustic look away, as you've done here a well. I think it looked better in the raw.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 5 ай бұрын
It does look better in the raw but the problem is keeping it dust free. Knocking down the edges and clean it up a little bit makes it so much easier to maintain. And as always you do with the customer wants.

Instead of boring and chiseling, try cutting kerfs between the mortises then snapping out planks for veneers and boxes, less waste.
@ricos1497
@ricos1497 3 жыл бұрын
With what? A tenon saw? Sounds difficult!
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 3 жыл бұрын
That would be interesting, but it would not yield very good veneer as there are several cracks running along it. Thankfully the stuff grows on trees. Around here it is cheap enough they burn it. this was saved from becoming firewood.
@daraven4714
@daraven4714 3 жыл бұрын
@@ricos1497 the old ways would have chiseled a couple of groove on either side and pry flat boards out with wedges. Skilsaw will cut to depth and a prybar, chisel or other fulcrum will snap out quarter sawn like boards. No power tools? A kerf saw will do the same? No kerf saw big enough? Get three boards, three bolts, nine nuts and 12 washers. Sandwich the saw between two boards with a bolt at each end and one in the middle. The third board should be wider than your depth and that is your fence sandwiched between two nuts. Most carcass/back/tenon saws can handle this with just two nuts at either end. If you have to, remove the handle for clearance. Japanese pull saws are best for this temporary jig, as the handle is easy to remove

Because in this case, that's not an option. Also, that method tends to degrade over time. There are ways around it but it's not as easy.
