Chief, I know this is a 6 year old video I stumbled upon by accident, but seriously, thank you sir 🤙 These are the exact tools I use (I've started building catty frames maybe a month ago) and a simple how to is what I haven't found. Tiny bit of background, Aussie, truck driver, over the rat race and love working with timber with a bit of a thing for projectiles 🤣 This video mate was straight to the point, informative and it's going to help me improve on what I'm doing now. Take a bow sir 👍

Good comment. I’ve just started getting back into catty’s at 53 yrs old, had them years ago but it was the black widow type, and could never get accurate with them. But these new flat bands are brilliant. I’m going to try this method out as well. It looks amazingly satisfying work too. 👍🇬🇧

So glad I came across your video. I ordered a slingshot and wondered about the possibility of making my own. I build balsa, paper, and plastic planes so I am a hobby guy. I was researching buying a used band or scroll saw and after seeing your video I now know that I can build a slingshot with the jig saw and Dremel that I already have. Thank you!!

been shooting wire frames and tubes for ever and just got some theraband on the wire frames and have two wooden slingshots in the works (one was done and finished but the band groves were too shallow so the varnish had to be re doneafter some reshaping) I only used a circular saw drill and rasp to do the rough work and a knife some mini metal files and some 100-200 grit sand paper to smooth it I'm really happy with the custom shape that came from digging it out of a board with just some rough marks to guide me. thanks for the inspiration I took a lot from your designs while sketching and carving and will use your dremel technique on the other one that is mostly still a block of wood.

Several months ago I actually bought a Dremel and a jigsaw with the intent of trying to make some of my own slingshots and spanking paddles. After I got them though I realized I didn’t know how to go about using them, got discouraged and never bothered. Now that I actually have an idea of how to go about doing it i might give it a shot.

I’ve got a panel saw and a dremel. I think I should be able to manage. Want to have a go at the hobby I haven’t done since the late eighties . But looking at the prices for a piece of moulded plastic. I’m not as keen Think I’ll get a free one. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge and upload this helpful video.

@pebbleshooter38078 жыл бұрын
You're clearly used to making loads of these, John...very efficient! Besides a jigsaw and a spade drill for the "pinkie" holes, I use a hand rasp and file to shape my birch plywood slingshots (takes a bit of practice), and 120 to 300 grit sandpaper to finish off: I would definitely advise wearing a protective breathing mask (M-3 brand) against the fine dust composed of glue and wood during the entire processing stage: this stuff is really bad for your lungs. I usually paint two coats of wood sealant for the final touch, but polyurethane is probably a better choice in the long run - I don't know.

Very nice John! But you should warn people to use a dust mask doing all the Dremmel work. Sawdust in the lungs is really bad especially when paired with the dried adhesives from the laminations. I had a friend die from this and it's a cheap fix. Thank you! Great video!

He died from woodworking? It must've been a long time of abuse ?
@tedparker21645 жыл бұрын
@@desertrainfrog1691 Not necessarily. I used to lecture wood carving clubs around my state here about wood toxins in hardwoods like walnut wood, etc. A lot of trees make toxins to fight off insect attacks that occur in cycles, but they fine sawdust that hangs in the air for awhile after you power sand can go deep into your lungs. Why die early if you needn't.

@@tedparker2164 what about hand sanding? I usually wear a 3m N95, so not the best protection I don't ever use machine sanders.

@@desertrainfrog1691 Hand asnding is negligible, power sanders are the devil with dust.
@desertrainfrog16915 жыл бұрын
@@tedparker2164 Thanks for the info. I try to be safe, usually I just do any kind of hand sanding outside and then I know it's good. With metal, same story. If it's inside with aggressive sandpaper/rasp on wood/or file on metal, I'll use a mask of some kind. If it's fiberglass, G-10, or micarta, respirator regardless. (And ideally not in the garage, but outside.) Good to know that hand sanding is low risk.

@davidjohnston19718 жыл бұрын
Plywood in the States, multiplex in U.K. and Europe, same thing really. You want top grade, mostly heard it referred to as Baltic Birch in U.K./Eur. in the states it's cabinet grade plywood. You'll probably have to look for it at better lumberyards or specialty wood mills. Not likely you'll find the quality at your local home center. Lower grades of plywood will have voids in the middle layers. These may not show until you shape your cattie. The voids can lead to weak spots, especially in your thinner, narrower sections, this could lead to catastrophic failure, at worst, unsightly at best. If your just looking for something to get a taste of making your own. You might look for HDPE cutting boards. Look for ones in the thicker range, 1/2 inch or better. You could also glue up thicker sections with 2 part epoxy and some clamps. HDPE is an easily worked plastic, holds up well and makes a great cattie. You may find it's better to work with hand tools rather than power tools. If it gets to hot it tends to melt, although if you keep moving and not overwork any one spot this can be avoided. This is also a good choice for making proto types before making in the more expensive plywood. Check in local thrift shops or second hand stores, as cutting boards often turn up.
