Whether for spring cleaning or the Swabian sweeping week - the broom is an everyday object that we have all had in our hands. But no one ever wonders how it is made.
Broom and brush making is an old craft that hardly anyone still masters today. But anyone entering Harald Klein's workshop in the Palatinate Forest will find themselves in a time when this traditional craft is still flourishing.
He uses old machines and the fine feeling between his rough fingertips. A raw beech trunk is gradually transformed into a delicate broom that will last a lifetime.
Surrounded by tons of wooden planks and wood dust, many chips fall as Harald Klein saws, planes and drills the wood into shape. He sorts and drizzles the bristles made from Bahia fibers, horsehair and sheep's hair before "pulling" them into the broom with great sensitivity.
The result is an everyday object that you will see with different eyes the next time spring cleaning or sweeping week is just around the corner.
