People say it looks ugly. But I don't think she made this buttonhole to be perfect but to show in an obvious enlarged way the basics. If you really want to make a buttonhole you use thinner thread in the same color as the fabric with smaller stitches and a smaller needle. And if you do that with this technique I think you'll get good buttonholes. But this didn't need to be beautiful. It needed to be visible. And that's what she did. And she explained it all very clearly. Thank you for posting this and just ignore the people bitching around here!

So you just want a cutout in a heart shaped? I don't know any machine that can do this. You have a couple options. I would apply interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric, just a little bigger than your desired shape. This will stabilize the area. Cut your heart. You can do the buttonhole stitch shown in this tutorial to finish around the edges. Or use the zigzag stitch on your machine. Just shorten the width of the stitch and the zigzag stitch will create a satin stitch look.

@cometkatt4 жыл бұрын
you dont have to use a machine for this part. you can a: just use the drawn lines as your guides or b: if you want the added stability of the sewn outer lines do a simple running stitch following the lines. the only reason that is done is for stability of the layers so a running stitch should be more than enough -

I think on the ends I would take the thread up through the line of the box on the top. So instead of going from the hole you just cut, you would take your needle down through the very top line, then bring your needle up through the same bottom line you have been sewing on. So your stitches would continue in the same direction instead of fanning it out on the ends. Everything would remain square. This would create a bar tack on the ends, but I don't think I would make them too big, maybe 3 or 4 stitches across. So instead of rounded ends you would have rectangular ends.
@carish14524 жыл бұрын
Start at 3:48 if you already have a hole that just needs to be sealed with the stitching. I used the techniques to seal a hole for adding buttonhole elastic to cinch the waist in my pants. Fray check would've likely soaked through the layers and been too visible on the exterior of the waistband. I've had that happen before 🤦

I feel silly asking, but I can’t quite make it out - did you make a knot at the end of your thread to prevent it pulling out when you completed that first stitch? Or is the thread being held in place by the tension of the looping behind the needle?

I always wonder though, why do we need the box outside it, rather than just cutting a slit for the button to go through?
@amybethstephens20692 жыл бұрын
The fabric will fray and the hole will enlarge causing the button to get loose. The box helps to protect the surrounding fabric from wear and tear :)

I notice she seldom uses an ending "T" or "D" on words; this may be American regional accent. Generally she sews well. She doesn't use gimp, and does not talk about the type of thread she uses. She is used to buttonholing with a machine, not handsewing them. It's a heavy button hole.

@ProfessorPincushion8 жыл бұрын
+Joel Van Goor I usually don't measure my thread but I'd say you want to start with a length of 12-14". If you make it too long, it can get tangled and knotted up a lot more and then you're spending most of your time trying to get out tangles.

she sewed it down so the layers of fabric and interfacing don't shift while she's stitching the buttonhole. you could sew the box with a sewing machine or baste stitch it by hand. heck, you can seal the layers with double-sided hem tape or basting glue. you can even just pin it all in place while you sew the buttonhole. i guess this is what they mean when they say, "common sense isn't so common."
