You should be able to play it also with out the mouthpiece with open end flute techniques (example shakuhachi). Just the first cut should be enough with correct technique but the cut needs to be in right angle (bit steeper i believe) and a bit shallow/shorter

You can do this with a mini carrot. It's very high pitched but it worked just do all of the steps 12x smaller.
