Thank you for this. For years I couldn't wrap my head around what to do and how to do it. I'm 42 years young and still hoping to get something done within the industry. The rest will be a breeze (they need to show this type of stuff in art school, at least where I went 20 years ago).

This is really helpful but as for fanart like I have had so many mixed reviews for fanart. I have had college professors tell me to include fanart because it's still art. While my highschool art teachers have told me not to include fanart. I think it all really depends.

if it's most of your portfolio, for juniors that's okay. studios also will usually state on their website if they allow/encourage it when submitting your portfolio. just be attentive to what your employers are looking for! your portfolio will tend to be curated for the position you're applying to. tldr; yep it does depend! just look at what employers want and allow :>

What about when you’re working two different things? For example, someone is a character designer but they’re also an illustrator. Do they have separate portfolios or do they combine it in one big portfolio?

a lot of artists i’ve seen have created separate pages in the same website (for ex you can make multiple pages on wix) and just label them “illustrations”, “character designs”, “personal work” etc!

Hey Jackie! My goal is to work for a specific animation studio in the future and I am wondering if I should include character designs in the studios style in my portfolio? Could I create an original character project in the studios style/universe? ^.^
@JackieDroujko Жыл бұрын
hi! absolutely, if you're applying to a studio that does preschool TV, include that type of style and fewer pieces that show realistic video game concept style for example. but be careful, you want this piece to be versatile enough to show it to other studios and not have it look like you're just 'lifting' a studio's style. good luck!

I've been loving your videos and been learning a lot on getting into the industry, the do's and the tips. But I'm curious, is can I work for studios/companies under an alias? Obviously when a legal document is required or asked for that needs my legal name, I will be happy to provide it but is it possible to mainly use an alias such as in your resume, credits, portfolio, whatever name-required basis? Because I am planning on having two careers. one is an art-focused career in which I figured I should use an alias for when working for studios/companies as a freelancer and/or full time, while the other is more non-art, more "physical" career where I may use my legal name more
