With all due respect: I've been making these chicken drinkers for years. If you had placed the cups much lower on the bucket (yes, you MUST place the bucket on a block because the cups are lower than the bottom of the bucket) you would be increasing the amount of water available to your birds. Also, there is an industry-wide misconception regarding white or clear water containers for poultry drinkers. The use of BLACK containers completely eliminates the growth of algae in the containers. Once the water is exposed to light, algae will form. The concern that black containers will make the water warm in summer doesn't hold water (pun intended). I have tested the water in white containers and black ones in the summer sun...both will be a bit warm, black no more than white. Placing the drinker in partial/complete shade helps.

Was just about to type that--get them as low as you can. Thanks tutu, I almost used my white bucket. Also, I'm wondering if there's a filter you can twist onto the threads of the cups inside the bucket. Our water is heavily chlorinated.

@Ed E , The chlorine should dissipate if left exposed to the sunlight and air for a day or two . Use two or three buckets. By the time that the chickens have emptied the first bucket , the second bucket should be ready for use. OR collect and use rain water which is what I do . I collect the rain water from the roof into a 55 gallon barrel. From that into a five gallon bucket with the drinking cups . The five gallon bucket is filled automatically by use of a float valve. As long as it rains now and then , I have never run out of water. Actually , the 55 gal . barrel is located inside of the chicken coop because it freezes here. That volume of water in a barrel takes quite awhile to freeze. If it looks like it will be cold enough for long enough to freeze the water , I attach a seed propagation mat to the side of the barrel on the side facing the corner. My chickens have never bothered the heating mat . And the water does not freeze and I do not have to water my chickens. I collect the water from the roof of the chicken coop. I could collect the water from the roof of my garage. But , I only need 55 gallons of water to fill the barrel . The barrel is usually overflowing to the outside every time it rains.

So if you had drilled the holes closer to the bottom of the bucket AND filled the bucket to the top, you would have had a FIVE gallon waterer , as it is , filled to the top, it may only be a 3 - 3 1/2 gal waterer , good idea though
@HomeownerRepair7 жыл бұрын
They're close enough to the bottom. I tend to change their water every few days anyway so it's not a big deal

@pershop49502 жыл бұрын
there is now a different design on the market. don't know when it came out compared to your question or this video's date, but there's now a design that doesn't depend on this yellow stick to be pecked on to get water out.

While I like the idea and will be doing something like it, one thing to note from your video is how much waste there was with this bucket. The waterers are up so high that there is a full gallon of capacity below where the waterers are installed that cannot be used. If you install them lower you can make use of a lot more of the water making it last longer between refills.

Made one last week! Only problem I'm having is the chickens just drink all the water out of the cups until they are dry... They can't seem to figure out they need to press on the yellow arm! I been trying to show them repeatedly with my finger but it doesn't seem to be working!

I tried this, using 1/8 inch bit, put the pvc tape on, it was a real hassle to prevent the cups from leaking. Then when I finally got it working and I gave it to the chickens, they just ripped the yellow piece out of the cup, draining all the water :(
