Huw, I really love your easy-going , laid-back style. The first video of yours I saw was the one where you made a raised bed from a free pallet, reusing the pallet nails too. Two things struck me then. First, like Nature, that pallet was completely transformed into a raised bed - no waste! All parts had a purpose. Secondly, I had been spending so much money on the materials to start up my raised garden that I was getting discouraged. Then I saw that video. I have used pallets to build my beds, erect a fence around the garden, made garden gates AND made 3 compost bins. Even built a chicken coop out of pallets. All inexpensively and all because of your inspiration. This video today is inspirational like the first one I saw. To see Jack’s enthusiasm reminded me of my first attempts. Thank you so much for what you do. I am your devoted fan.

You 2 are so cute together. I enjoy your videos. A couple of things about the compost bin - If you leave one side accessible then you can turn the compost over and remove it easier . On the 2 sides, have the boards extend past the corner posts about an inch or so, however thick your front board is. Nail slats across the front sides, creating a channel that you can slide a front piece up and down. Also I cover my pile with a tarp with rocks on it so it doesn't attract pests and it helps the scraps to get hotter to turn into compost faster.

Pallets are in my top five of free resources one can obtain, like Huw here, I too have built compost heaps from them. I have also built a 14 x 8 shed from them too, guess what I have stored in it...yes more pallet wood...Steve...:)

Pallets can be chemically treated to prevent rot and then be used for the transport of chemicals. Pallets have designations that will tell you whether they have been chemically treated or not.

I used to have pallet bins, field day for rats, so I put in bought plastic ones, reinforced with mesh. Have just seen they have actually chewed through several layers of mesh, enlarged the airholes and helped themselves. I give up.

I have a plastic compost bin and recently, rats have tried digging under it so I've had to sink wire netting around it. I have also had to put wire netting over the top as a squirrel has chewed a hole in the lid. I won't let them beat me.

@@geordie1032 oh yes we regularly see excavations underneath: the bins sit on wire netting, but I think the tunnels are part of a housing project, not food procurement. I haven't managed to save a tomato crop for 3 years now, despite Colditz type defences. Good luck with yours!

You must ensure your pallet wood comes from a pallet marked HT. Do not use wood from a pallet marked MB or one that has been painted.

Great video but I wouldn't recommend a compost bin directly under a tree. My sisters compost bin combusted (burst into flames) at 4am and set light to the neighbours tree! The fire brigade had to be called and the neighbour lost the tree to fire damage. Site a compost bin in a shady but sensible place.

If you don't have any wooden support struts then take an additional pallet board for each side and make what would effectively be 4 squares. Most pallets will have at least 6 little square blocks. Put one in each corner and screw the square into the block. I'd suggest using as long a screws as possible as it won't be as robust as the one shown but it will save getting additional wood if you don't have it already

why put 4 sides on it, when 3 is all you need. 3 allows you to turn the pile easier with a shovel, and eventually shovel it into a wheelbarrow.

I love how they make a pallet out of the pallet wood lol.. Easier to just take three pallets lash them together in a U shape and use some chickenwire for the front so u can open to access.
