I'm glad you provided both hand and machine comparison blocks. I prefer the machine blocks because they lay flatter, appear that they will outlast hand finish, and besides, I just can't hand sew because of arthritis in my hands. I'm glad the machine blocks won in my estimation. Thanks for taking time to make this video! More machine sewing please...

I love these videos! I love how you aren't making this difficult. In my 20s, I just did this or that, quilted since I was 13. My mother said I surpassed my teacher early on (she was my teacher lol). I did a 4H class, in my 20s, to teach teens, and this old bitty kept making us rip and redo, too technical, sucking the fun right out of it. Lol It was when I discovered IRONING every addition, LOL squares and rotary cutters. Lol I'd been mostly self taught, go with what works. I do want to say tho, there is a way avoid all those bias edges on the very edge of the blocks. In the end it doesn't matter, I guess, but it can cut down on frustration when squaring things up and sewing the blocks together.

Please share any tips to make our lives easier! I have a few more videos in mind for this series, then we will switch back to journaling for a bit while people work on their quilts. (Or I might do the baby clothes quilt...still undecided)

Thanks for keeping it real & making it look do-able. I’ve been wanting to learn crazy quilting since I was young. I wasn’t sure about the black, but it absolutely works. QUESTION: what are you using as a pressing mat on your cutting mat? Silicone sheet?
@danceswithpitbulls3 жыл бұрын
I don't believe it's silicone but it is some type of baking sheet I got off Amazon. I was hoping it would act more like the Ranger craft mat, which it didn't, but it's still fine to press on.

Oh my goodness how beautiful❣️❣️I am new to your channel and I just love your style ✨✨💖❣️ Where could I find some remnants of velvet and sparkly or just some kind ? Where do I look is what I’m asking 😊🙏🏻 When you put the Lana’ pink piece on your bobbin sounded correct. Or the sewing machine sounded better. ☺️✨👍🏻 well maybe a new needle , or a price of lint in the under area. ☹️

Go to thrift stores and look for fancy dresses or blouses to cut up- I also find yardages of velvets and other fabrics there. You can buy small amounts at fabric stores. Look in the clearance aisles first

With the machine square, does it matter if your first piece is four or five sided?
@danceswithpitbulls4 жыл бұрын
No it doesn’t matter at all.

Do you all need a foundation for blocks or can you put them. On later help
@danceswithpitbulls Жыл бұрын
I always use a foundation square. You can actually use any fabric.

I have a question: I'm making a kimono jacket for a friend, and she'd like it to be in a crazy quilt style. I was thinking of cutting out the pattern on a muslin foundation, and then going ahead and machine piecing the fabrics to the foundation, and then after trimming, proceeding to put together the garment as usual. Do you think there would be any problems this way? I'm an experienced seamstress (well, I'd call myself advanced intermediate :-) ) But I've never done anything that required a foundation like this and I don't know if that's going to mess with my pattern piece sizing. I'd really appreciate any input you can offer! Thanks!!
@danceswithpitbulls5 жыл бұрын
To be honest I would make blocks and sew them together to the approximate size you need for your pattern rather than trying to piece a large piece straight to a muslin cut to the pattern. It's harder than it looks to get random doing it that way. I would machine embellish too with rayon or metallic threads. I did a long Victorian walking skirt that way and it turned out fabulous. lay your pattern out and see what size blocks would work. Keep me informed!

danceswithpitbulls this was the other thought I had too, so I’m glad to hear that you’ve made a garment from crazy blocks before and it worked out for you! I was just practicing and I realized that making a random pattern in a rectangular shape would be a challenge. Oh, and if you saw the CRAZY rainbow of colors and fabrics that she picked out! The organized type A in me is having a fit! I so hope that I can pull this off. THANK YOU so much for your advice!

Just curious when you are sewing, are you backstitching on the machine to make sure the it doesn't come unstitched or are you just making one line of stitching and leaving it?? I really need to break out my sewing machine and start learning how to use it lol
@danceswithpitbulls5 жыл бұрын
The only time I might bother to back stitch is when I am sewing the blocks together at the end.

My sewing machine needle comes unthreaded when I forget to make sure the thread take-up lever is not put at its highest position before I pull the thread thru the needle to cut it. Thanks for the lovely tutorial.

I have a question.. do you think Rayon could work with this? I hate rayon for clothes, it’s so finicky with washing. I’m not sure how it would do in a crazy quilt.
@danceswithpitbulls2 жыл бұрын
Rayon works well. If this will be a utility quilt keep the embellishments sime and wash the fabric first. If it's going to be a keepsake type don't worry because you should be careful with those and not wash them.

Did you make a sevond part that shows how to use curved and irragular shapes?
@danceswithpitbulls Жыл бұрын
Yes. But I personally gave up on curves.

@@danceswithpitbulls I understand completely! But I'd love to see your technique. The Kentucky Museum in Bowling Green, KY just had a beautiful crazy quilt exhibit with quilts from the 1890s to 1910s and almost all of them had so many organic shapes (not appliqued) that I can't achieve with the normal modern crazy quilt technique. And I'm having trouble figuring out how on earth they did that! One theory of mine is using English Paper Piecing. But anyway, I'd love to hear how you've done organic shapes.
@danceswithpitbulls Жыл бұрын
@@abbypotter5526 I guess I use my embroidery and embellishments to make organic shapes. You can hide a lot of straight lines that way. I wonder if the older crazies had curved pieces held down with embroidery stitches.

What size block do you prefer?

Depends on what I am making. I work with tiny 3" to large 11". I think 6" or 8" are my favorites though.
