How to make a creative resume in Microsoft word

Thanks for the great tutorial. I was despairing of ever making a sleek resume for myself on basic tools like Word. This really taught me how it's possible to make good-looking documents with Word. I just finished re-designing my resume a couple of hours after watching this video.

I’m glad you found it useful. :) If you want to make it even more simple, you can just stick to the sidebar and make it a bit longer (or maybe from top to bottom, depending on personal taste) so there's room for your picture just above your contacts within the bar, while you skip the rest. That way you’ll get a nice clean resume with a little effort, and a bit more room for former jobs, courses and so on. Good luck, with your applications :)

What is the "little adjustment" that make you able to change the colors all at once and also the circle of the picture (you make a new one, in white?) thanks

The "little adjustment" is when I adjust the scale of the design so it fits the amount of information that I want in the resume. I cut this out to shorten the video, since it’s the same process as shown but more time consuming. You should be able to change all of the colors at all time during the process under the menu: design and then in the menu color. The white circle represents a picture. I hope this answered your questions.

This was great! How do I insert my photo? I can't seem to add a photo to add into the circle.

You can copy your picture into the document by right-clicking it and choose copy, and the right-clicking inside the document and choose paste. It's important though that the picture you use is a perfect square, or else you'll get an oval ;) If it isn't a square already, and you don't have any image editing software, you can use the Paint program for this purpose just remember to save the picture in JPEG. When you copy the picture into Microsoft Word and click it, a new menu will pop-up in the menu bar, and you'll click it. If you got the 2013 version of Word as me, you'll go to the top-right corner and click on "Trim" right beside the height and width numbers of the picture. Here you'll proceed to click on: "Trim to figure" and choose the circle, and you should end up with a nice circle-picture to put instead of the white circle. :)

There's a fancier way of pasting the image inside a figure. You can a find a minute-long tutorial about it in KZbin. Very easy and efficient.

Hey Micah, if I understand you correctly, then the problem is, that when the figure are made on the ordinary document as in the video, you’re only able to move it around there, and it gets locked, when you enter the header or footer and the other way around. So if you want the figure to stay in the header and footer, then you’ll have to create it while you’re in the header/footer but then it will get locked when you’re designing the rest of the document, and you’ll have to enter the header/footer, when you need to change it. I hope this answers your question. :)

You have to go to the tab called: Design, which is the forth tab in the toolbar in my version of MS Word. Then in the right top corner you will see a square with four different colors, named: color. This tool will provide a range of different color-schemes, and will change all the colors at once. I hope this helped. :)

No, if you got a lot of information on your resume, you could create another page, but the golden rule is, that it shouldn't extend more than 2 pages. For the second page I would probably copy/paste the first page, and then delete the sidebar and the picture/circle, but leaving the top and bottom bars for the continuity of the design. You could probably make them a bit more narrow depending on what fits your resume best. :)

Hey mate. I made the same resume bt these all shapes are being misplaced when opening ms word 2007 and pdf format. How can i solve that

That sounds mysterious. If your word-document is in the preview format, then it will mess up the placement, but as you print your document you should still see the version you designed. If this is the case then you have to chance the format in the menu under show, and then choose the edit document format. However I don’t know if this works in the 2007 version, and since your PDF is messed up as well it could seem like your document is actually messed up unless the PDF-software you use have the same properties and you need to change your settings. If you have access to a printer, you should be able to test this by printing the page, and if it turns out fine then it’s probably your settings you need to change. I hope this makes sense and you’re able to figure out what’s wrong. Have a nice day.

I guess it really depends on how traditional the country and company where you're applying for the job is. I myself have used this design before both where I got the interview and where and didn't. Whether the design played a role is really hard to tell, but some companies will definitely see it as a turn off while others probably find it refreshing. You could try and tune it a bit down, and maybe only use the side bar for organizing your background information, if you’re nervous about it being too much, but it's something you have to decide yourself, since I can't speak on the behalf of the company you're applying a job for. Maybe a traditional resume is better in your case? I really don't know. But every choice we take is a risk, and we have to decide whether that risk is worth it or not. The most important part though is the content of your resume and that you’re able to present it in an organized manner. I hope my answer helped you, and I wish you good luck. :)

You copy an object by selecting it and pressing Ctrl+c and paste it by pressing Ctrl+v or you can righ click the object and select copy and then paste.

When you work in the header-area the rest of the document gets locked and the other way around. In this case the resume is only designed in the ordinary document, so you won't be able to make changes, when you work in the header-area. You have to double click on the document to fix it. As for me I'm located in germany and in my opinion its very nice and creative but do employers really like it like that, isn't it too much? I'd like to do mine like that but its nt really the norm isn't it..?

To be honest, I think it really depends on the person who reads your resume and the type of company you're applying a job at. Yes, some might think it's a bit too much, and others would think it's different and a fresh breath to the pile of boring resumes. No matter what, you're taking a risk whether you're using a standard resume design or you're trying to stand out. If your resume looks likes everybody’s else, you risk being forgotten, but if you stand out, you better stand out well. I myself started experimenting with different kinds of designs after a lot of rejections with the excuse that over a hundred people applied for the job, and I was wondering whether or not my application got read in the first place. So when I use this, I see it as an insurance for getting noticed, but I know the risk, that if it’s a conservative company I’ll probably get discarded at once. Personally I wouldn’t like to go with something over the top, but rather something organized and a bit of color like this one, which actually got me an interview (but I’ve also used it, where I didn’t get the interview). I don’t know the statistics, but I guess in some cases it works, or maybe I would have gotten the interview regardless of the design, it’s really hard to tell. So in conclusion, I think it’s important to go with a design, that makes you feel comfortable. Look at what kind of company and job you’re applying for, and make your decision on whether you think they would appreciate a different resume or not. When I’m looking for a job, I tend to use a creative resume for about 25% of the time, and a standard well organized one for the rest of the time, just to make sure, that I’ve emptied all of my possibility’s. But no, it’s not the norm, and I really can’t or won’t tell you whether or not you should go for it, that’s only a decision you can make. Maybe it’s a totally no-go in Germany, or maybe it’s not. I really don’t know. Maybe you can find some information on google about that. I wish you a good day and good luck with your resume. :)
