The Dakota fire pit is no longer recommended in Scouting. It has far too high of an impact on the landscape. That's what the literature says. Our council's camps have several 10'×20' areas where the topsoil has been removed and replaced with a mixture of the mineral soil excavated from the pit filled out with other non-organic things such as crusher run. We are allowed to dig in those fire pits because fire won't kill the organisms nor cook out the organic matter that make topsoil fertile.

In a survival end times situation, coming soon. I think Dakota Fire Holes would be absolutely necessary so that your fire can't be seen by others.
