Hey Bonnie! I'm an experienced body caster and have a few tips that will make the process easier. Firstly, you should never need to leave the bandages on for over an hour, around 20 mins tops is usually the timeframe - even with larger torso casts. Using warm water to soak the bandages, and casting a warm room will help the setting process - so you were right to use a hairdryer for the warmth. Creating support ridges round the edge of the mould, and across the mould in a cross shape also helps - simply cut thinner strips of the bandage and smooth them on as 3D ridges - hope that makes sense! You're totally right to recommend the supervision, it can be a very disconcerting process, and it's good to have someone on hand - though the mould is so fast and easy to remove if you do feel uncomfortable - as you will have discovered. Though the main reason to have someone on hand is in case of fainting - this can be an issue when people are being cast, as they tend to hold their breath, or breath in a very shallow way. For this reason, casting sitting down is a good idea (so you don't hit the deck if you do faint). Ideally it's best to have someone else cast you - though I know this isn't always feasible. Also, filling the nose holes from outside of the cast will give a better result around the nose. simply mix a little alginate, and gentle press it against the nose holes on the outside. Hope this helps :). Love your vids x
@PrettyScary7 жыл бұрын
PS - the vaseline step in the mould can be skipped, as plaster doesn't stick to alginate - so that will save you a little time and hassle. Also, ensure you leave your cast to dry for a few weeks before sealing, as moisture left inside the plaster can form mould at a later date :) x

You can use a massage vibrator to get the air bubbles out quite easily. If you coat your brushes with liquid dish soap first, and let it dry before using, they can be reused. I have been able to re-use mine up to 6 X. You can also reinforce the plaster with pieces cut from old panty hose or nylons. That works like gangbusters.. Mine even survived a 4' fall to the floor without damage. The nylon pieces are also fantastic for reinforcing liquid latex. Best of all the nylons are free! I have been able to re-use my latex prosthetic of an alien forehead no less than 18 times with minimal degradation because of the reinforcing. Great videos. Please keep them coming.

I should add, clean your brushes after using and re-coat them. Not as good as new, but quite usable. Your brand of dish soap can also make a difference. I would try several to find the one that works best for you. I have used Ivory and Dawn with good results.

for the bald cap I found it pretty useful to actually have 1 coat of liquid latex on top of the bald cap for when we want to find the hairline it's super useful to have that line of separation, some people use sharpie but you can always sand the lines away. No perfect way but I found that more useful especially for extended molds

Finally a self made face cast using alginate! I'm so fed up of seeing people use plaster bandages straight onto their faces! My only tip would be check your plaster bandages before getting to that step, I used some once that didn't get rock hard at all, even after hours of setting (I didn't know this until I went to take the face cast off, which was ruined because of crappy plaster bandages!)
@BijouxVaudou7 жыл бұрын
Also - I bought a kit on Amazon for my facecast (didn't come with the bandages but did have everything else) - instead of plaster at the end it had "stone powder" which was similar to mix as plaster but super rock hard, I've dropped mine a lot and it's not broken haha. It's worth trying to find some of that because certain plasters aren't going to be as strong as others and all the hard work will be wasted!

If you use enough layers of it (3+) and it is a half decent plaster bandage you should have no problems. Just be careful while removing.

If you used spray varnish be it water based or oil based it would work. Although it would take a touch longer to dry it would give you even better results. I know about the spray cans of varnish since I have done this process before. As for the vanish, I would suggest oil based since it would help on keeping it more stable so it will not breaking up so easy if water is spilled on it. I may also suggest using watercolor pencils on marking your face and head so you can know your hairline. But also you can mark where your want the final negative mold would be when you are pouring to make it.

Why are you using alginate at all? I dont know that material and I'm curious, if it is better to use this instead of just using plaster bands. I studied art and made a few masks myself a long time ago. I always used only plaster bands. It was for another purpose, but it worked really well! Even if I poured it out with liquid plaster. To protect my eyebrows and lashes, I put tiny pieces of toilet paper on them. This worked very well! By the way: I love you work! ❤

Could i wrap this in polymer clay to make a mask out of after making my cast? I was thinking if i put a layer of foil over it first i could coat that in the clay and easily remove the cast from the foil without ruining the shape of the clay, bake it, and then remove any imperfections with polymer glue or more clay before a final bake, after which could paint the outside

I was wondering do you think it possible to maybe make a complete head like counting the back of the head too and can you paint on it? I am asking this question because I am making my own movie on Elizabeth Short ( the black Dahlia) and for the beginning scene I have to make the dead fake body of her which will show have her cut in two the smile and everything so I been making that in my art class but I was wondering if I could make the head like this? what do you think?
@venicebitch16887 жыл бұрын
Ashley esquibel actually yes! But it's very dangerous to do alone and impossible. You will need a group of friends to help you cover your whole head evenly. Also there are much more realistic ways to creat a full body and head that are on KZbin that might be easier to do. Also that's a awesome idea super creative!
@NightOwl_307 жыл бұрын
you also need to do it in two pieces. Keep undercuts in mind. What they do is they have to sides, one for the back and one for the front because if you have one piece you can't take it off because the chin won't allow it to come off. Remove the two sides then attach them together again and fill it with plaster. You can even make a bust that way. If you see a line in the middle because of the gap between the two pieces just sand it down but make sure you wear a mask. Do not breathe it in. It's carcinogenic and it can also harden in your lungs.
