This video is made with still shots as I made these pillows about 5 years ago which was way before I had a video camera. I hope it helps for those that want to make their own pillows.
**** I finally found some places online to buy feathers! ****
I am not affiliated with any of these places, since I found them I wanted to pass the info on. It looks like they are all goose feathers, but you could ask the individual stores if you want chicken feathers.

What a great tutorial! You carefully laid out every step, including some we might be inclined to gloss over. I''ll ne resizing down and feather square throw pillow inserts. The info you've provided will be a real help. Thanks!

I made one 2 years ago for a friend, I used the down from 2 jackets that were being thrown away. It was messy to do inside, feathers everywhere, I recommend working with feather outside!

@ladyhawthorne1 have you seen the "feather bazooka"? A tube or pipe, a compressed air blow gum nozzle. Drill a hole to fit the nozzle, tape the nozzle in the hole. one end of the tube in the feathers, the other end in the pillow case, blow the air towards the pillow, it vacuums the feathers right into the pillow! A couple of tutorials here on KZbin.

Recycled Cottage & Garden I took 3 flat old pillows put it all in one & it was too full. So, I just now took some out. I plan on closing it up. I am trying it out to see how it feels before I sew it up. I guess my question is how do u know how full to make them? Thank u in advance & for the video!! Yr co worker is quite blessed & lucky to have u in his life!!! 💗🙏🏽🍀

This was perfect and to the point! Thanks! I have some old pillows I want to revamp and there were some excellent suggestions in your video I might not have thought of. Question: would French seams be good for the 2 sides that are stitched closed? I think at least I would stitch 2 rows at the smallest stitch size to help prevent feathers coming through the seams.

this is one of the best made how-to videos. I totally forgot about pre-shrinking the fabric, sealing the edges. I didn't even think about the practical apsect of dealing with feathers. My husband prefers feather pillows and gets headaches when his pillows aren't quite right. One question I have, is how to build the pillow such that I can add or subtract feathers, if I don't get it quite to what he likes. I was thinking of velcoing a small part of the opening, putting a few hand stitches over the top of the opening, and maybe some fabric tape or duct tape, so it would hold, and still be easy to reopen to adjust. Any thoughts on that?

Thank you for your kind words. The velcro opening sounds like it might work or just whip stitch the open edge. Once adjusted perfectly, you can stitch it tighter. I would put the end with the opening seam into the pillowcase first in case some feathers work their way out.

thanks for the video. the problem I'm experiencing is that no matter how many layers of clothing I put on my pillows, the feathers always find a way out as time passes throughout the whole pillow!

The fabric we use here is called ticking. It is a heavy and tightly woven cotton, kind of a cross between denim and cotton duck. Anything but the downy feathers does have a tendency to poke through.

*Very informative. For a king sized pillow, how much ticking fabric would I need?*
@ladyhawthorne1
@ladyhawthorne1 3 жыл бұрын
You would need to know the size of the king size pillow, then a salesperson at a fabric store would be able to assist you. It will depend on how wide the ticking is, most ticking is narrower than regular fabric.

My husband has a feather pillow from his grandma that he loves. The case has a zipper and just lose feathers. They look horrible 😩. Can I clean these feathers? Or should I just replace them? And where can I get feather/down mix to replace the innards???
@ladyhawthorne1
@ladyhawthorne1 3 жыл бұрын
You can wash the pillow on gentle in a large washer, might have to go to a laundromat depending on the size. You want plenty of room for it to move around. Then tumble dry on low heat. If the feathers are coming out, check to see if the seams are bad or if they are just poking out of the fabric. If they are poking out, it needs a new cover of heavy ticking material, it's about the same weight as denim, you can also use denim. I would not recommend a zipper though. As for replacing the feathers, I do not know where my co-worker got his and I am no longer in contact with him. You might try a google search. I made a small down filled pillow for a friend last year and used the down from 2 winter jackets that were being thrown out. It was a mess with down fluff everywhere, but it did work. Down won't poke out like regular feathers will. Check thrift stores for down jackets or even pillows, they sanitize bedding if they carry any. Best of luck with your project, it will be worth it.

@@ladyhawthorne1 thanks for this, i have one that was my great grandma's, it is my favorite pillow, it is used and old but still has good ticking, but i would like to know your thoughts about washing and drying it. its old and has some stains on it from use thru the years. can i bleach it on gental cycle and get it back to bright white? just wondering your thoughts. my great grandma passed away when i was 12 in 1991 , she was 92. anyway i sure like those pillows you made, they look so good. hope you have a great day, GOD BLESS .
