Thank you for the tutorial. I made one of these for myself years ago and we use it all the time. My sister passed away a few months ago and I wanted to give something useful to my BIL and niece and nephews to remember her. I used a new pair of her PJs that has butterflies all over them along with other fabric. I am happy how they turned out. Thanks again!!

Really great idea - especially when a full size mitt is a bit awkward. just a quick tip for those of us with less powerful machines that may have trouble starting on a thick seam. A "hump jumper" will do the trick and you can make one up in a few minutes using your scrap fabric with some batting. (For those who may not know about them they are placed under your presser foot behind the thick area to level your foot to sew across the "hump") Thank you for your very well done tutorial.

THANK YOU for the video and pattern.... I have made these for young kids but just scaled them down a little. Great video and super idea. My only suggestion would be to use all cotton- thread, batting, fabric. Insulbrite is heat safe already, but I wouldn't want a polyester catching a flame when my hand was in there. That stuff doesn't burn it "melts". Just a friendly suggestion. Again great idea and video, THANKS.

Thks Carol for the safety tip. Yes, cotton is best to use all the way around. I use mine primarily for lifting hot lids off pots and removing my pouched egg cups. Love them, and use it almost daily. I’ve never had them catch a flame. But it’s always good to stay safe.

GREAT Tutorial. Very easy to follow. Thanks. You are an inspiration to us who "waste not, want not." I think I would prefer cotton batting instead of "poly". But that's just my preference. On second thought, I might opt for 2 layers of insulbright. I'm kind of a Klutz, and if there's a possibility of getting burned, well.........
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I like cotton batting as well. I had lots of poly batting that I wanted to use up so that worked for me. Being that they are used mostly for stove top and microwave use you won’t need to much filling. If it seems bulky to you then sew across the middle between the thumb and finger pockets to help it bend when using them.

It is meant for mostly stove top. For taking off hot lids etc. I have used it on occasion to take out a light tray from the oven. The thinsulate gives you a bit of protection.

Love your mitts..but I did have a question do you really need the added batting as the insobrite has been very good on my pot holders...would make less bulk too

I like the feel of more substance to the mitts by using the poly fill or cotton batting. And it adds a little more protection. But if you don’t want to add it then you can certainly make them without it.

This is a wonderful project! Is there any reason you couldn't use cotton batting? Thanks for the great tutorial.
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use cotton batting if it’s not too thick. I find with so many layers it may be harder for beginner sewers. And when you are folding it in half it won’t bend as easily when you are using it. I would top stitch a few lines of sewing in between the finger and thumb pockets to help it bend.

@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Thanks for the response. I can see why you chose the polyester batting. Makes a lot of sense. Great use for small pieces of fabric. I will definitely make some of these.

Hello, for a larger size, I increase the height and width by 1". Do the inside measurements stay the same? 2" down from the bottom and 1-1/4" from the sides?
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts6 жыл бұрын
Yes, If you want to make the pot holder a bit bigger all the way around then I would stay with the same 2” down and 1 1/4” in from the sides.

I'm curious. Is there a reason you use a piece of batting and a piece of Insul Brite? Why not just two pieces of InsulBrite? When I make potholders I usually use two layers of InsulBrite but I'm not sure why.

Just to give it some substance so it doesn't feel so flat.

Went and got some poly for this; I ended up ripping out the whole thing. Substituted a piece of flannel and it went together much better. What is the purpose of the poly? Could it be eliminated altogether?
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts4 жыл бұрын
Just gives the mitt a bit of substance. You could also use cotton quilt batting or whatever you want.

@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts I would have preferred the flannel to be inside the smaller pockets to provide some protection from burning the top of my hand. I will see if I can make this happen. Love the shape but the mitt is small for my husband, who does his fair share of the cooking in our household!

These mitts are designed for the top of the stove use. Great for lifting off lids from steaming pots extra. So it’s good to have the protection on the palm side of the mitt. You could easily adapt this mitt to make a larger pattern to fit for your husband.
