They can Cynthia. Just note that like everything else when left outside in direct exposure of the sunlight, rain, ice, snow, and high winds they will begin to prematurely fade and wear. Keeping them covered will make them last longer.

Hope both of these help and trust me, fraying is almost eliminated using a wood burner to cut the mesh. You will need a glass cutting board, but I got mine at Walmart for under $7
