Very cool. I'm in HVAC and you're right about closed vs an open system I bet you'd increase the efficiency if you soaked the terracotta pots in water overnight.

I was thinking of buying a thick plastic bin, burying it, and putting a good cooler in there, lined with reflectix mylar bubble insulation. . The bin would protect the cooler from dirt, water and bugs. I am living in a tent turned shed hybrid.I have the entire 10x20 insulated with reflectix, taped with 3m duct tape. It stays toasty warm in below 10 ° NJ winter with only 2 oil lamps. In summer, I remove insulation only from the 3 windows and double doors. I have 3 thick tarps overhanging by 3ft with a foot of space between the tarps and structure.A little dark, not to much though as plenty of light gets in under the trap. It stays amazingly cool in 90° using only 2 little solar fans. Hope it helps anyone who finds themselves in my situation. (P. S I screwed several pallets together about 6 inches up, resting on bricks to avoid flooding then added plywood on the inside with linoleum for the floor.,so far, 5 years and all is well)

Very smart! I think the underground idea will work. The earth below a foot I think, maintains a cooler temp evenly, that's why many people use the underground cooling and heating tubes. They might know the exact temp, I think it's around 60°

Good video. Evaporative cooling works. In the Army, 50 years ago, we soaked our canteen covers when filling our canteens. This kept the water about 10* cooler than the air. It felt much better when drinking. I suspect that the bigger that gets the better it will work. Good Luck, Rick

First thing pops in my mind, campers have a fridge that can run off propane. That is a really cool and fun project, I got a pots in the back that might work. Thanks for sharing.

You may not be able to do this because your humidity is so high and your pots might get moldy but my 24” Zeer sits in a terracotta dish and the dish is always filled with water. Evaporative process keeps food in the Zeer cool. I did something different because I was unable to find a inner pot that was lead free (the 24” is a Pennington -lead free) I put a stainless steel stock pot in as my inner pot. It stays cool because although there isn’t an evaporative process, the stainless steel stays cold because it’s wet. I use the lid on it, and there is a terracotta lid on the Pennington covered with a straw mat.

It was 76 F in the shade. It only was 5 degrees lower in the pot at 71... Not enough cooling for long term food storage

Covering it with a blanket in the shade will help.Unless you have a very expensive cooler, the ice melts so quickly a blanket and banking the cooler with towels or blankets will help considerably.

Almost the same thing is used in Korea. Back in ancient times, they used to bury these giant pots especially in the winter to keep stuffs cool.

At 4:27 you show the outside air in the shade is 76 degrees. After the zeer pot evaporates the water, the inside becomes 71 degrees. So, it just cools down to slightly lower than outside air temperature.

I’m having problems getting the video to download and am wondering if plastic pots wrapped in this bubble foil insulation that I have for RV winterization would work. We don’t have sand in the desert so not sure what to do instead. Hopefully I can finish watching the video. What happens after you put the sand between the 2pots?

Well, a fridge needs to be about 5c, so every little helps I guess. A cool box with a wet towel over it in a shady place works
