I like your gar cage, it works well, nice little invention to remove the nylon cord. I am going to make one, appreciate your ingenuity. I will be fishing for gar on the outflow of water from Lake Okeechobee on the Caloosahatchee river in my new Twin Troller. Thanks again a real practical solution for a good lure, and removal system. @@dnejeff Thanks for the reply!!!! Does it effectively control the Gar's thrashing? I caught my first one last week and they are POWERFUL creatures for sure!
@dnejeff3 жыл бұрын
@@zachmac Once they are in the pvc pipe, the thrashing stops completely. Even if they try, there is no space for them to move. This makes cutting the nylon rope out of their mouth much easier. The fish can breath air, so no need to feel bad for them being out of the water for a few moments either. I'd love to see some pics. Good Luck!

Dude I consider myself a professional gar fisherman and that's fucking genius man.. I got to get the supplies and put one together myself and I will let you know how it goes sir but you definitely need to patent that and get that shitt on the market. If I could come up with any other things to add or make better I will let you know but that looks pretty solid right there.

The steel leader is the most important part of any gar rig lol all my gar ive caught with cut brim with steel lead on 20lb test, ive caught a pretty big guy that was about 4 foot he was a great fight
@LUCKYB.10 жыл бұрын
question I have is how long do you have to negotiate with that gar to get him to go into the tube ?
@AddictedAngler5 жыл бұрын
That's a good thing to have, also I think cab be used for pike
@dnejeff10 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay. Once you get the fish to the boat, I use heavy duty scissors to cut the line from around the teeth. I kind of pick it out until they can open their mouth. Once they can open and close their mouth, they are good to go. Thanks for the comment! Good Fishing! Doug
@dnejeff10 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay. Usually after they fight (it's a hard fight, but short) they will pretty much do whatever you want with them. If they get their second wind, just let them run out 40 or 50 yards and fight them again. After that happens once or twice, they will comply. Thanks for the comment! Doug

Believe me, I have thought about it. I am thinking about making a gar fishing kit. It would come with the garmenator, some rope lures, gloves, and scissors. What do you think? Maybe offer on e-Bay. Thanks for the comment! Doug
@grandwonder5858 Жыл бұрын
Great idea with that gar holder! Is that gar spinner that you made good for blindly casting for gars much like a regular spinner is for bass? A slow, steady retrieve is best I assume.
@dnejeff Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I know this would be decent for blind casting, but probably be frustrating because with this set up you are dedicated to gar only (knot on hook would keep bass from being able to bite it.) And yes, I find a slow and steady retrieve to be the best. If site casting, or casting into a group of porpoising gar, a slow retrieve (just enough to keep the spinner action moving) works pretty good. Thanks for the comment! Doug

@dougjeffries34855 жыл бұрын
Hey Iron Gear! With the gar in the trap, you simply cut the nylon out of it's mouth. so Yes the animal is fine. I just cut the rope as close as possible to it's jaw and pic it out with the scissors until enough is gone that they can move easily.

@matthewmeek42897 жыл бұрын
Hardest part is getting a hook in the mouth especially the longnose gar which is what this rig is for. (pretty much, most other shorter nosed gar swallow the bait whole) Ive caught many with live cut bait, The longnose gar holds the bait in its long snout for a longggggg time before swallowing the bait. leave your drag REALLLLY loose, I usally wait about 30 seconds-1 min before tightening my drag again to reel, try to wait for him to stop moving that is when they will swallow the bait. Once you get he hook in him they are very good at swiming under logs and getting away fast, these fish are without a doubt the fastest freshwater fish in the southeast, Ive seen one of these take my line 100 yards down river in a blink of an eye, before I could even get the pole he already droped the bait and kept flying down river, in the shallow Tar river you can see these things flying around moving the currents

Look at my comment above, I fish for gar using live cut bait if you cant find his rig. His rig will work ALOT better for longnose gar tho, I have found you usally only hook about 1 in 10 longnose gar without a rig like this

So the actual hook on the original spinner doesn't even need to go in its mouth? It's all the little peices of rope, I got big gar by my lake house and I'll get them to hit a live minnow but if I don't set the hook good it'll pull out of their mouth
@dnejeff8 жыл бұрын
Hi there! You're right. The floss gets tangled in their teeth and they are caught. Let me know how you do with them.
@dnejeff10 жыл бұрын
Sorry it took so long to reply. I'm not sure. Once you get the hit, don't set the hook like you would a bass. Just reel them in with a little back pressure. This will lock the rope in their teeth. Make sure you are using nylon rope too. Some of the poly stuff won't work very well. I hope that helps! Good luck! Doug

Hey There! No need to upscale this one. I use this lure when I fish and I usually catch 3'-4' fish on it with no problems. You'll need 12 lbs or better test line and of course a steel leader (I'd go with 18") just to be safe. Good Luck and let me know how it goes. Doug

I've been trying out the twisted nylon rope lures. The gar come up and eat it but they don't get stuck. I'm using twisted nylon rope that I've unwinded. They just come and bite it and spit it right out. What am I doing wrong?
@dnejeff6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. The only advice I can give is to maintain a slow steady retrieve to keep the spoon turning. Once you see or feel the fish take to don't do a heavy set but more of a deliberate increase in retrieve force/speed. If the floss is in their teeth, (and there is enough of it (the floss that is)) you'll be successful. Good luck. Tight lines! Doug

FaZe Trump the metal leader will prove itself useful if you get an aggressive fish on. Those teeth can rip the line apart, then you lose the lure. Good luck and I'm glad you had quick success! Take care! Doug

worst Hello there. Yes you can eat them and they are very good. Lots of recipes out there for gar balls and Cajun inspired dishes. It's important to note that the row is poisonous to humans so you should be very careful when cleaning. If cleaned properly, you should never enter the abdominal cavity of the fish though. It a white flaky meat that is a little more dense (like chicken lol) thanks for the question! Doug

so for the lure..that's it? just cast it and reel it like a bass lure. no pencil floats, no live bait anything??
@dnejeff9 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Yes, for the lure that's really it. If you can see the gar cast just in from of them or reel this life past them and they will go after it. They're attracted to the spoon and that's a it takes. I have another (cell phone video) on my page showing a fish going after the lure. Hope that helps! Good luck. Doug

What's wrong with using braided rope?
@dnejeff7 жыл бұрын
You could use braided rope if you like, but it will take a lot of time to get it unbraided so it will be hairlike. Using twisted takes 30 seconds to untwist and shake it out. I'd spend the cash and buy twisted. Good luck 😊 Doug

@dnejeff6 жыл бұрын
Josh Flori - gotta be the presentation. If they are active at the surface, you should just toss it in front of them and use a slow steady retrieve. That initiates a bite for me 80-90% of the time. You might shorten the floss too. Good luck. Doug

I would say a clear nylon would be best, Ive put these rigs on a regular hook with live cut bait with great success. And you just leave the bait there and wait for them no reel work
@matthewmeek42897 жыл бұрын
They love freshly killed cut bait, I usually catch a few brim and cut them into 1/4s LARGE chunks to cover the whole hook with the nylon hanging free around it
